2015-1106, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
M. TECH THESIS :
TITLE: “Modeling of Chemical Reactions in High Speed Rarefied Gas Flows”
Thesis is mainly focused on developing a 2D parallel solver with and without chemical reactions in the flow at high speed.
The main emphasis is on modeling of, dissociation, recombination, rearrangement and ionic reactions which take place in
hypersonic flows (i.e. reentry of space vehicles). To pursue the aim, Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method,
which is a highly popular mesoscopic method, is used. Problem deals with rarefied hypersonic flows with a significant
degree of thermal and chemical non-equilibrium where continuum fails.
Effect on flow properties (drag coefficient, density and temperature variations) caused by chemical reactions at highspeed
and temperature are analyzed to optimize shape and performance of high speed vehicles.
Validation of DSMC algorithm is done by simulating the flow over a double wedge at different Mach numbers and results
obtained for pressure drag coefficient using Maxwell and CLL gas surface interaction models are compared with
experimental results.
PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN: ( M. Tech Projects)
1. Numerical solution of Poisson’s equation using Finite Elements Method.
A FORTRAN code was written for the finite element formulation of the problem in which element stiffness matrix
was generated from which associated connectivity arrays for global stiffness matrix were formed thereafter force
terms were calculated using linearsolver.
2. Numerical solution of benchmark lid-driven cavity problem using compact schemes.
A FORTRAN code was written for studying the vorticity and stream function contours of the lid-driven cavity using
highly accurate compact scheme for various Reynolds number. Got exact triangular vortex at center and its sub
satellite vortices, which is a benchmark problem to test any numerical new scheme inCFD.
3. Numerical investigation of two time level Adams-Bash forth scheme on 1-D convection equation.
A FORTRAN code was written to investigate a two time level scheme to analyze how physical and computational
mode varies with time and how they affect the finalsolution.
4. Numerical Investigation of heat conduction equation.
2. e: e-
2D steady state heat conduction equation with internal heat generation was numerically solved using finite volume
approach, where temperature variation profiles for different number of elements were analyzed.
5. Experimental Investigation of Volumetric particle image velocimetry (VPIV).
Presented a term paper on set up and working principles of 3D Particle Image Velocimetry, as a part of measurements in
fluid mechanics course work.
B.TECH Major PROJECT- (Duration-2months)
Title - Design and fabrication of “Retractable Pneumatic landing gear system”
Description-The project aim was to build low force landing gear that could be easily operated using a pneumatic
system. Battery was used for power system and gear system was incorporated in aircraft model.
Role Played- Designed and fabricated Retractable Pneumatic landing gear system taking economy and efficiency
into consideration.
