Collaborate to innovate: developing a digital literacies programme for the whole academic community
This year the University of Sussex Library worked with the University’s new Technology Enhanced Learning department (TEL) to launch an innovative series of events promoting the use of mobile technologies to support teaching and learning. Mobile Technologies Week involved an unprecedented amount of collaboration across all levels of the University. The diverse and exciting programme was developed and delivered co-operatively, uniting the relevant expertise of staff engaged in skills training from the Library, TEL, Careers and IT Services. The week’s synergetic approach was further complemented by workshops and seminars led by academics, peer support sessions from doctoral researchers and undergraduate blog posts. With content suitable for all skills levels, from the complete novice to the avid consumer of technology, we reached out to the whole academic community to create a highly inclusive event. The programme focused on developing digital literacies across the board; transforming students into smart learners and supporting teachers in bringing technology into the classroom to increase student engagement. Sessions explored a range of dynamic themes such as: demystifying e-books, augmented realities, technologies informing pedagogy, lecture flipping and apps to enhance learning. This case study will benefit those interested in exploring cross-departmental collaboration with a skills development agenda. Attendees can expect to learn how we constructed a well-rounded programme of events with wide audience appeal by collaborating with colleagues from across the University. We will outline the logistics of promotion and delivery when working with other departments and share our experiences of what worked most effectively for different audiences and what challenges we faced. Drawing on our own reflections and recommendations, attendees will be provided with a framework that can be applied to their own collaborative working practices.
