Project: ZADCO, ZIRKU Facilities Capacity Enhancement - Flare System Upgrade Project, ZIRKU
Island, UAE
Project Description: An existing flare system was upgraded to accommodate the loads from the expanded
facility as well as two major upstream production and gas treating units. Also, a
staggered depressuring arrangement was designed to minimize the flare excess load,
while meeting the industry standards in radiation, and depressuring time within the
plant restrictions. This project presented a challenge due to its terrain elevation and
congested existing facilities with regard to the routing of the flare header to the flare
risers. The challenge was to properly design the newly added low point “Boot” at the
Knock Out Drum downstream. Dynamic models of the major relief cases were
simulated to realistically size the boot and the liquid removal system, and to avoid
oversizing of these components.
Position: Lead Process Engineer, Flare System Upgrade
Responsibilities: Conducting/leading the required activities for the FEED phase

Details: Front End Phase: Process Engineer, Sub-lead for utilities, chemical packages, and off-
line coke drum processing systems, CBS(Closed Blowdown System- the disposal
processing system for coke drum effluents (and/or refinery slops) running at various
modes of operation in a coke generation cycle)), Coke Water Quenching/Cutting
sections, Coke Maze/Sump).Preparing the relief narratives and semi-dynamic
simulations for major (Coke Drum) relief scenarios, Relief Valve and equipment sizing
(to accommodate the requirements of the semi-batch operation in CBS, with multiple
modes of operation). Also, responsible for simulating (Coker Island,

common case for many units, for which Bechtel modified the set pressure value
specification of the towers overhead receivers in general, the unit shutdown logic, and
provisions to avoid that situation in the existing plant.
