15. Major issues: Poison Centres
• A new regulation to help inform health professionals
about ingredients in paints and inks, in case a consumer
consumed it..
• Each formulas needs a unique identifier
• The EU’s own study shows our industry will be hit with an
enormous bill :
44 million formulas x €220 notification cost = €9 billion!

A category 2 classification isn’t an alternative. Its still a disaster for the industry, with all paints containing TiO2 requiring a “May potentially cause cancer” label, and this will lead to huge concern amongst consumers, and potentially pressure from retailers to remove TiO2 from formulas. All paint factories will require modifications, to ensure closed processes to handle TiO2, we’ll have no more eco label and no paint recycling, so we can forget about PaintCare.
Despite the weak scientific case, we can’t be complacent against a category 2 opinion from RAC, so we are preparing our public affairs strategy together with CEPE and TDMA. Given the French and Germans are in favour of a category 2, I would not bet against this outcome. If that is the case, then we have to work on strategies that mitigate the impact, and avoid the ridiculous situation where we are labelling paint products as potentially cancer causing by dust inhalation, when the dust risk no longer exists once the paint is produced.
