2. MILLIONS OF AMERICAS ARE FACED
WITH POVERTY EACH YEAR.
In 2013, about 48.8 million people or 15.8 percent of the U.S. population
had income below the poverty level.
That is more than 1 in every 15 people in the U.S.

3. WHO?
There are many aspects of poverty; who it effects, how one
comes into poverty, what there is available for those in
poverty, where poverty is more of an issue, etc.. In this
report I will focus on the “who” of poverty. With that being
said, there are so many components of poverty that I
cannot talk about one part without including other parts.
Who is effected compares differently to other areas of the
United States than some.
4. SINCE THE RECESSION IN
2007, THE POVERTY RATE
CLIMBED FOR THE NEXT FOUR
YEARS. FROM 2012-2013, THE
RATE REMAINED STEADY.
THOUGH IT IS GOOD THAT IT
DID NOT CLIMB AGAIN FROM
DURING THOSE TWO YEARS,
IT DIDN’T GET ANY BETTER.
THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE IN
POVERTY REMAINED THE
SAME. MILLIONS OF PEOPLE
IN THE US STILL SUFFERED
FROM LIVING BELOW THAT
DREADED POVERTY LINE.
Many families were kicked off food stamps in
1996 due to the welfare reform. About
24.000 annual income for a family of 4 would
bring them above the poverty line. That said,
living on that low of income, leaves very little
room for error. Many Americans are living off
only $2 a day.
The working poor are the most effected
group in America today. They often do not
qualify for welfare or any aid to help support
them because they make too much but they
make too little to live a substantial life.

6. IN REGARDS TO THE CHART IN THE LAST SLIDE; THE
NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN HOUSE HOLD HAVE TO MAKE
A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY TO BE ABOVE THE
POVERTY LINE. A TWO PARENT(ADULT) FAMILY WHO
HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SUFFER MORE THAN A TWO
PARENT HOUSEHOLD WITH FEWER CHILDREN.
DEPENDING ON WHAT THE ANNUAL INCOME IS,
THOSE WHO HAVE MORE PEOPLE TO TAKE CARE OF,
MUST MAKE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE THAN OTHERS.
7. IN 2009, THE U.S.
CENSUS BUREAU
CAME OUT WITH THIS
INFORMATION. THIS
CHART SHOWS
CHILDREN WHO ARE
IN POVERTY IN
RELATION TO THEIR
RACE/ETHNICITY. THE
LEADING
RACE/ETHINICITY IN
POVERTY IS NON-
HISPANIC BLACK
AMERICAN'S. IN
CLOSE SECOND
WOULD BE NON-
HISPANIC
AMERICAN/INDIAN/
ALASKA NATIVE. NOT
FAR BEHIND THAT
ARE THOSE OF A
HISPANIC
RACE/ETHNICITY.

9. THE OVERALL POVERTY RATE HAS DROPPED SLIGHTLY
SINCE 2014, BUT THE IMPACT OF POVERTY STILL HITS A
LARGE DEMOGRAPHIC. THE MOST STAGGERING ONE
FOR ME, IS THE TWICE THE POVERTY LINE. THAT MEANS
THAT 33.4% OF PEOPLE IN POVERTY ARE SO BELOW
THE POVERTY LINE THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO MAKE
AT LEAST DOUBLE WHAT THEY MAKE NOW TO BARELY
BE ABOVE THE LINE. THOSE PEOPLE WOULD
ESSENTIALLY BE HOMELESS. MANY OF THE PEOPLE IN
POVERTY ARE THOSE OF NON-WHITE BACKGROUNDS.
CHILDREN ALSO HOLD A HIGH NUMBER OF PEOPLE
BELOW THE LINE. AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ARE
HIGHLY EFFECTED AS WELL.
11. IN REGARD TO THAT LAST SLIDE, THERE ARE PLACES
IN THE UNITED STATES THAT HAVE MORE POVERTY
STRICKEN AREAS IN THEM THAN OTHERS. UTAH IS
RANKED 11TH FOR OVER ALL POVERTY. THOUGH THAT
ISN’T BAD, ITS NOT GOOD. POVERTY ISN’T A
POSITIVE THING. 339,900 OF OUR ALMOST 3 MILLION
PEOPLE ARE IN POVERTY. MISSISSIPPI IS RANKED 50TH
AND WITH CLOSE TO THAT SAME POPULATION,
THERE ARE DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE IN
POVERTY THERE. IN UTAH, THERE IS SIGNIFICANT
AMOUNT OF NATIVE AMERICANS IN POVERTY. THERE
ARE ALSO A LOT OF LATINOS AND AFRICAN
AMERICANS.
12. POVERTY
There is no doubt that there is a
poverty issue in America, but how
we’re trying to find a solution is also
a challenge. Many things go into the
logistics of poverty that it makes it
difficult. So many Americans are
faced with poverty every year. The
majority of the poverty make up are
those of Latin and African American
decent. The area in which people are
more likely to be in poverty would be
the southern states. But why? Why
those types of people? Why those
areas? How can we make it so our
children do not have to face the issue
of poverty? How can we help those
who are currently struggling?
