He is a descendant of an old Cossack
family. Mykola Mikhnovsky was born in
the family of a village priest in the village
of Turivka in 1873 . He spent his
childhood among Ukrainian nature, folk
songs and stories. The outlook of the
children was influenced by his father. His
father was a very patriotic man, who
loved his motherland and Ukrainian
language very much. Mykola finished the
gimnasium and then he entered the law
faculty of Kiev University.

Mikhnovsky moved to
Kharkiv In 1899. Mykola
Mikhnovsky quickly
gained popularity among
the Ukrainian public of
Kharkiv. In the early
1900's the student
community under his
leadership made a
concert dedicated to the
100th anniversary of the
“Aeneid" by Ivan
Kotlyarevsky. In
February he had a
perfomance in Kharkiv,
where he showed his
patriotic views .

creation of the Revolutionary
Ukrainian Party (RUP) in Kharkiv —
the first Ukrainian political
