Geothermal energy is heat derived within the sub-surface of the earth. Water and/or steam carry the geothermal energy to the Earth's surface.

2. The name 'Geothermal' comes from
two Greek words

3. Geothermal energy is the heat
energy stored deep inside the earth.
According to various theories, the
earth has a molten core. The fact that
volcanic action takes place in many
places on the surface of the earth
supports these theories.

4. Geothermal energy is found in the
form of the heat content of hot dry
rocks.
Initially hot zones, deep inside the
earth are identified and the heat
energy from these hot zones is
tapped by drilling deep holes inside
the earth.

5. To extract the heat energy, cold water
is forced through one of the
boreholes which leads it down to the
hot areas of the earth.
Due to high heat, water gets
converted into steam.

6. This high-pressure and high-
temperature steam is drawn to the
surface of the earth through the other
borehole.
Steam is then passed through a
"separator' to remove any sediments
or impurities collected in the steam.

7. The purified steam can then be
passed through a superheated or
directly to the turbine for generating
electricity.
After doing work, the steam is passed
to the condenser where it gets
condensed to liquid and the cycle
repeats.
