3. Principle of ajm
o Process that removes material with the help of abrasive
particles
o Diameter of particles- 0.025 mm
o Process consist of mixture of fine abrasive particles and gas
at high pressure
o Stream of mixture is directed through a nozzle on to the
surface of workpiece
o Due to impact of high speed abrasive particles, metal is
removed
o Gas stream carries both the abrasive particles and the
fractured particles away.

4. Set-up for ajm
Abrasive particles are held in
hopper
Regulator controls flow of
particles
Gas at high pressure supplied to
mixing chamber
Abrasive particles travel
through the hose and enter into
the nozzle
When this high speed jet from
nozzle impinges on the
workpiece, erosion causes and
their impact removes the metal
from workpiece

Jet Machining Process
5. Advantages of ajm
Intricate cavities and holes of any shapes
can be machined
Brittle material of thin section can be
machined
Low initial investment is required
No direct contact of tool and workpiece
Low amount of heat generated
Normally inaccessible portions can be
machined with fairly good accuracy

6. disadvantages of ajm
o Low metal removal rate
o Abrasive particles can not be reused
o Not suitable for ductile materials
o Poor machining accuracy
o After operation, cleaning is must

7. Applications of ajm
o Fine drilling and micro welding
o Machining of semiconductors
o Frosting and abrading of glass articles
o Machining of intricate profiles on hard and fragile materials
o Cleaning and cutting operations on germanium, silicon,
quartz, mica etc.
o Machining brittle materials like glass, ceramics, refractories
etc.
