From filming and editing a short product video, I learned about important production and post-production techniques. On set, I discovered the impact of shot types like tracking shots and obeying camera rules, as well as how lighting and camera rigs can stabilize footage. In editing, I saw how minor cuts and adding sound or subtitles can significantly alter the tone, pace, tension and overall feel of a video. Careful filming and editing are essential to crafting an effective final product.

What have you learnt about technology from the process of constructing
this product?

2. Production Technologies
From being the cameraman and director on our shoot I learnt:
• The power of tracking shots
• The necessity to obey the 180 degree rule in a plain environment (few recognisable features)
• The importance of using a variety of shots
• The power of the tripod in steadying the camera even at the most difficult angles
• How to use a fig rig/camera cage to steady the camera in “handheld” sequences
• The importance and power of a carefully constructed lighting setup

3. Post-Production Technologies
From having heavy creative input during the editing phase of the production I learnt:
• The effect changing a mere few cuts can have on the tone/pace of the piece
• The power of editing in it’s ability to fix mistakes (e.g. the lack of sound recording)
• The way adding a soundtrack can have an enormous effect on the dramatic tension of the piece
• The importance of picking the right typeface for both subtitles and credits
