Editor's Notes
Welcome to the Teaching 101 Training! This is Module 4: Materials and Equipment.
You should hear an audio recording reading this text. If you do hear it, click “Continue.” If you do not hear it, take steps to troubleshoot your device. For example, try turning up volume and checking connections for headphones.
On a desktop or laptop computer, use the right arrow on the keyboard or left click the mouse to move forward through the course. To move backward in the course, use the left arrow on the keyboard.
On a tablet or phone, tap the screen, swipe left, or slide the navigation bar at the bottom of the presentation to move forward in the course. Swipe right or use the navigation bar at the bottom of the presentation to move backward through the course.
Let’s get started with the Teaching 101 training! This training is recommended for those who are not certified in teaching, so if you’ve never taught before, this training is for you! We also recommend you go through all 6 modules in order from 1-6 the first time through the training.
The modules are completely self-paced and there is no time limit. You can repeat material as many times as you want to, go back and forth during the module, and you can start and stop anywhere, anytime. Let’s go ahead and begin module 4, Materials and Equipment.
By the end of this module, you will be able to define what materials and equipment are for a lesson and explain why they need prepared in advance. You will also be able to determine items needed for lesson and activities, evaluate necessary space, and make a checklist for items.
What are Materials and Equipment? Anything that is needed to accomplish a lesson and learning activity is considered part of Materials and Equipment.
Why is it important to consider Materials and Equipment prior to each lesson?
First and foremost, it ensures that all of the necessary teaching materials are available for the scheduled class time. If there is a learning activity that would be great for the lesson, but we don’t have all the necessary items available for that day, we can’t use that learning activity. Because we are prepared in advance, it allows us to maximize the use of available learning time, and the stress on you as the teacher is reduced when in front of the students because you know you have everything you need. Finally, as a result of your preparation, the students will have a less stressful learning experience, which will have more positive results.
The first Materials and Equipment that are necessary for each lesson are the reference materials. The teacher reference book with the page numbers noted, lesson materials for the students, and any outside resources like books or website links used for the lesson or learning activities.
Another thing to consider is what space is available in the classroom. Are there enough desks for individual activities? Are large tables needed for collaborative work or art projects? Does the game require floor space and is there access to enough floor space indoors? All of these considerations need to be made and included on the checklist.
Some items that may be included on the checklist are the basics, like copies, something to write with and write on, and maybe game instructions and pieces for a game if you’re using a game as an activity.
In addition, we need to think about technology resources we might need. A screen to use, some sort of device, and if there is an app involved in the activity. Remember to include a power source on this list! This includes charging stations, cords, and outlets. There are many more items that may be needed, so be sure to read the activity carefully and make the checklist of all the items necessary to accomplish each activity.
When the lesson, activities, and other resources have been decided, it’s time to make the checklist. Using a checklist helps to ensure the necessary items are all available and prepared in advance of the class time. Be sure to include all reference materials as well as all items needed to teach the lesson and accomplish learning activities.
It’s time to review Materials and Equipment!
What are Materials and Equipment? Any items necessary to accomplish the lesson and learning activities, like the references, pens and pencils, and technology.
It’s important to plan Materials and Equipment in advance to ensure that all of the items are available prior to class time. This preparation reduces teacher stress, and can increase positive results.
When making the checklist, be sure to include all references materials, the space needed for all activities, and every item needed to accomplish activities.
Here is a quick quiz! I will return after the quiz to see how you did.
How did you do on the quiz?
I am sure there was some nice work done!
Let’s do a quick review of Module 4: Materials and Equipment. We started by defining materials and equipment for a lesson, then explaining why they need prepared in advance. We also discussed how to determine items needed for lesson and activities, evaluate necessary space, and make a checklist for items.
Congratulations on completing the Materials and Equipment training module! You may repeat and review this module anytime you want. We recommend going to Module 5 next if this is your first time going through the training. Thank you for participating in the Teacher 101 Training!
