- Welcome to the CSAUS Teaching 101 Training! This is Module 1: The Lesson Plan.
- Let’s get started with the CSAUS Teaching 101 training! This training is recommended for those who are not certified in teaching, so if you’ve never taught before, this training is for you! We also recommend you go through all 6 modules in order from 1-6 the first time through the training.
- The modules are completely self-paced and there is no time limit. You can repeat material as many times as you want, and you can start and stop anywhere, anytime. Let’s go ahead and begin module 1. The lesson plan.
- At the end of this module, you will be able to define an effective lesson plan, name 5 sections of the lesson plan, and explain the importance of a lesson plan.
- An effective lesson plan is a classroom process for achieving the learning goal. An effective lesson plan will be a teacher’s guide for facilitating a lesson. Every lesson plan should include what the students need to learn, how the lesson material is taught and reinforced, some measuring tools to assess the students’ learning, and any tasks to reinforce material between classes.
- There are many types of lesson plans to choose from. For this course, we will be using a plan with 5 sections.
- The first section is goals and learning objectives, which provide the road map for the lesson. Second is the learning activities, which include instruction of the lesson and any activities to reinforce the lesson material. Next is section 3, materials and equipment. These are all tools necessary for completing learning activities. Assessments is the next section and can be any type of measurement of achievement both during and at the end of the lesson. Finally, we have take-home tasks, which are the homework pieces that reinforce the lesson. Each section has its own learning module for a detailed description. We do recommend that you go through each module in numbered order if this is your first time through the course, but you are welcome to access any module at any time.
- Why is it important to have a lesson plan? Having a plan allows the teacher to have a plan for time with students in advance of class time. This reduces teacher stress during class time, because it organizes the subject matter to be sure everything is discussed, and it allows planning for blocks of time so the time is effectively used. A lesson plan is like a checklist for class time, so each section can be filled out like a checklist, and then checked off as it is completed during class time.
