Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome to the Teaching 101 Training! This is Module 6: Take-Home Tasks.
  2. You should hear an audio recording reading this text. If you do hear it, click “Continue.” If you do not hear it, take steps to troubleshoot your device. For example, try turning up volume and checking connections for headphones.
  3. On a desktop or laptop computer, use the right arrow on the keyboard or left click the mouse to move forward through the course. To move backward in the course, use the left arrow on the keyboard.
  4. On a tablet or phone, tap the screen, swipe left, or slide the navigation bar at the bottom of the presentation to move forward in the course. Swipe right or use the navigation bar at the bottom of the presentation to move backward through the course.
  5. Let’s get started with the Teaching 101 training! This training is recommended for those who are not certified in teaching, so if you’ve never taught before, this training is for you! We also recommend you go through all 6 modules in order from 1-6 the first time through the training.
  6. The modules are completely self-paced and there is no time limit. You can repeat material as many times as you want, and you can start and stop anywhere, anytime. Let’s go ahead and begin Module 6, Take-Home Tasks.
  7. At the end of this module, you will be able to define what a take-home task is, explain why take-home tasks are important for students, and the 4 skills that take-home tasks encourage.
  8. Take-Home Tasks are relevant tasks that students do at home between lessons.
  9. Take-Home Tasks should encourage all 4 skills associated with language learning: Reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
  10. There are several reasons that Take-Home Tasks are important. The biggest reason is to allow students the opportunity to practice the language at home with the native speakers in the home. This reinforces the lesson material each week so the new vocabulary and grammar is not forgotten between lessons.
  11. When sending the students home with tasks to reinforce the lesson, be sure to include a short instruction describing how to accomplish the task. It should be appropriate for the grade-level and include information like how often they may repeat the task and if they need to bring the completed task to class the following week.
  12. Take some time to read through some examples for Elementary level students. Each example is followed by the skill the task reinforces, as the legend on the bottom left shows. These can be online with links given, or physical copies handed out. Assigning 1 – 2 take-home tasks for elementary students would be an adequate number. You are not limited to the tasks listed here, so have fun with it and get creative with the take-home tasks. Just be sure to note which of the 4 skills each task focuses on.
  13. Now take some time to read some examples for Middle level students. As on the elementary example list, each example is followed by the skill the task reinforces, as the legend on the bottom left shows. These can be online with links given, or physical copies handed out. Assigning 2 – 3 take-home tasks between each lesson is a good number for the Middle level. As with the elementary examples, you are not limited to the tasks listed here. Just be sure to note which of the 4 skills each task focuses on.
  14. And, finally, look at some examples for Upper level students. The same applies to this list as the elementary and middle level lists. For the Upper level, 2 – 4 take-home tasks is a reasonable number, depending on the complexity of the task. As with the others, you aren’t limited to just the examples listed here.
  15. Let’s review Take-Home Tasks now!
  16. Take-Home Tasks are relevant tasks that the students do at home between lessons to reinforce the lesson material.
  17. Take-Home Tasks, like the lessons each week, should encourage the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension of the Chinese language.
  18. Here is a short quiz! I’ll return at the end of the quiz to see how you did.
  19. How did you do? Great job!
  20. Let’s do a quick review of Module 6: Take-Home Tasks. We began by defining what a take-home task is and then listed 4 reasons why they are important. Finally, we discussed the 4 skills that take-home tasks encourage.
