How Tectonics
Plates Move
Description of Movement
1. Convection Hot rock rises and cooler rock sinks
which pushes the heated rock up. Plates
get carried by this movement. (like a
conveyor belt at the grocery store)
2. Ridge Push
3. Slab Pull

How Tectonics
Plates Move
Description of Movement
1. Convection Hot material rises and cooler material
sink(denser) which pushes the heated
material up. Plates get carried by this
movement.
2. Ridge Push The dense rock responds to gravity by
moving down the slope created from
heated rock. This force then pushes the
rest of the plate away from the mid-
ocean ridge.

2. Ridge Push The dense rock responds to gravity by
moving down the slope created from
heated rock. This force then pushes the
rest of the plate away from the mid-
ocean ridge.
3. Slab Pull At subduction zones, leading edge of the
denser plate pulls the rest of the plate
with it under the less dense plate.
7. What’s Next? In Google Classroom, make a copy of and
then read and mark-up the text labeled:
16.1 Reading: Ridge Push/Slab Pull
DIRECTIONS FOR MARKING UP ELECTRONIC TEXT:
1. Read the article one time through.
2. Under each heading, highlight or underline at least three key ideas
3. Find an image of each type of movement and paste it into the box at the end
of the reading.
4. Include a caption in your own words as to what is occurring in the image. It
should describe the process going on, not just say, “this is ridge push”
