This document outlines a WebQuest activity for students to learn about literary devices used in poetry. Students will create a brochure defining terms like acrostic, alliteration, ballad, and including examples. They will use several websites to learn definitions, examine examples of poems using the techniques, and guidance on writing haiku and other forms. Students will then create two original poems using the literary devices and share their brochures in groups. The activity aims to teach students about techniques in poetry and have them practice writing poems.

Welcome
This WebQuest is on the topic of poetry, and it will help students learn about the different
literary devices used when creating poems. It is for grades 3-5.
Introduction
Did you know that poetry is more than just rhyming words? There are many techniques used
when writing poetry and it is important to know all about them! In this WebQuest, you will learn
all about the terms and styles that are used when we write poems!
Task
You are going to make a brochure about the literary devices used in poetry. You will first
decorate the cover, and then work on the inside.
You will write down the definitions to the following words in your brochure, using up the first
and second flap. You will use the site given to you.
Acrostic
Alliteration
2. Ballad
Concrete Poem
Free Verse
Haiku
Imagery
Metaphor
Narrative Poem
Rhythm
Stanza
Verse
Once you have completed your definitions, you will take a look at how these things are used
when writing poetry.
You will then find out how to write the poems that you saw examples of.
Finally, you will create two poems on the last flap of your brochure that use at least one of your
literary vocabulary words. Write the word that is being used overtop of the poem. You will share
your brochures with each other in groups.
Process
Use this site to find your definitions and copy them onto your brochure:

Now, take a look at some examples of these terms in real poems:

These websites will explain how to write some of the poems you just looked at:

3. Now, create your own poems with the guidance of all the sites you have looked at. Write them
on the last flap of your brochure. At the end, you will share your brochure with members of your
group.
Evaluation
Students will be given class participation points for sharing their brochures with their groups and
for participating in the WebQuest activity. The brochures will be collected and graded, then hung
up around the classroom.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have completed this WebQuest about the many literary devices used when
writing poetry. Now you know how poems work, and you were even able to create your own!
Great work!
