2. • Typography shows rather distorted lettering that consist of scratches that surround the title. It gives
the impression of a struggle and violent attack. Additionally, the size of the lettering changes. There
seems to be great emphasis on the main phrase “CHAINSAW” and to continue to superiority of this
phase it is placed centrally on the title layout.
• The colours used hint an old time setting, roughly around the 90’s, simply due to the grainy effect it has.
Furthermore, the brown wash could represent a rural Texas culture, possibly symbolic of dirt and soil.
The light glow the lettering has could represent the cliche “light at the end of a tunnel” phrase meaning
there is a large quantity of deaths or possibly a double meaning with a somewhat positive outcome at
the end.
• The words used are very forward and aggressive. “Texas” shows very southern ideas towards society
and could represent the cliche of violence and gun crime Texas is generally portrayed as. “Chain Saw”
immediately creates the mental image of brutal murder therefore prior to watching the film it gives the
impression of a gruesome bloody nature. “Massacre”, the large never ending deaths occurring within
this film, and finally subtitled “The Beginning” hinders that this is only a small fraction of the climax of
deaths among Texas.
• Audience would generally expect a brutal horror film simply through the language used and the grainy
colour scheme portrays old southern beliefs. Within this example I believe the hardcore language used
is much more striking and out weighs the colours and overall appearance.
3. • The language used brings into question on who stays in a hostel. What comes into mind is either less
fortunate people who may not have a stable family around them who are able to support them
financially, possibly escalated themselves into a financial deficit due to illegal substance use of over use
of alcohol and cigarettes etc. Another, example could perhaps be tourists who are looking for
affordable accommodation and because they are in a foreign country no one in the community knows
who they are therefore their existence is somewhat unnecessary.
• The typography appears to me to resemble broken bones of some sort that have been chipped due to
abuse. They are also large and makes the one titled film significantly stand out.
• The colour of the lettering is an off white witch additionally made me think of the bone assumption,
as well as, the glow around a few of the letters. Personally, it makes me think of a heart rate monitor
and the levels in which the wave increases and decreases in size. The peak of a wave is the tip and i
believe the tip of a wave in this case would be the ‘s’, which also makes it the central focus.
• Image is of human organs which give an immediate gore impression.
• The audience would immediately expect a horror gore film consisting of brutal murder with the view
of dissection of the human body due to the image as well as the style of lettering.
4. • Typography is striking due to it all being in caps lock as well as the difference in the size of lettering
creates a somewhat 3D effect where by the words are more easily seen and significant to the eye.
‘NIGHTMARE’ being the largest word id the word that is read first and therefore insinuating a fright
of some sort.
• The colour of the title is red and connotation of red are blood, violence, passion, death etc. Therefore
creating the idea that the film is of a horror. There are also red stains that represent blood marks and
hint a violent nature.
• Language used is a immediate identification of horror. ‘NIGHTMARE’ indicates an awful event as well
as a form of unpleasantry dreaming. This could hint that the film is of a physical dreaming nightmare or
an awful life even that could be similar to a real nightmare. ‘Elm Street’ is an unfamiliar street and un
heard of. This could mean that only a small minority are affected and that the people may be linked
some how.
• Audience expectations are of a horror. This is shown by the red connotation and blood marks being
the title as well as the phrase “Nightmare”
5. • Typography is shown to be an assemble of words crated from dripping blood. This gives the
impression that this film is of murder therefore a horror genre. As the previous title varied the font
sizes of the words this title has also done the same thing, this time highlighting the words of “SOUL”
and “TAKE” in order to draw attention to specific words relating to the film.
• Colour used again is red and within this context it is symbolising the colour of blood thus reinforcing
the murderous aspect and thus forming expectations of a gruesome horror film.
• “SOUL” has a religious connotation and if often used within religion. The soul of a person is the
somewhat after life of a being and is what is believed to travel on after death. and leaving the physical
body. This then compliments the blood styled lettering and continues the horror expectation. “TAKE”
is used to possibly insinuate that a soul is taken against someones will and without them knowing or
expecting it to occur, in this case i believe the taker would be a murder who is inevitably taking a
human beings’ life.
• Audience would expect a horror film with a cases of cereal murder.
