2. Motivation/Review:
Play a song (a part of it) about peace like “Imagine” by John
Lennon. Have the students react to the song and share their
thoughts with partners. Then let them define or describe what
peace is.
Then let the students read the essay on pages 329-331 of the
book and answer the question.
1. What was the author’s initial feeling or thoughts about offering
the sign of peace?
- He felt it was an insincere act.
2. What changed his view?
- Their town became a battlefield and he, together with his family
and many others from his community, had to flee their homes.
Being exposed to such conflict and hardship changed his view.
3. How would you describe his life at the evacuation area?
- They had little food and drinking water, and they were prone to
various infections and illnesses,
4. What does epiphany mean? What was the author’s personal
epiphany?
- An epiphany is a sudden moment of realization. He realized that
the sign of peace shared at Mass is an acknowledgement that
everyone is united as one through Jesus Christ and not individual
well-wishes for peace.

3. Presentation:
Have the students focus on one paragraph from the essay. Ask
them what the passage is called and to give their own definition of
paragraph. Then ask them identify the different parts of that
paragraph.
- The topic sentence states the main idea of paragraph
- The supporting details form the body of the paragraph. They
give details that support or develop the main idea stated in the
topic sentence.

2. - The concluding sentence marks the end of the paragraph. It
(1) restates the main idea using different words, (2) summarizes
the information presented, or (3) links the paragraph to the next
one by introducing a word, phrase, or concept that will later on be
discussed.

PRACTICE EXERCISE: Examine the following paragraphs.
Where is the topic sentence located in each passage?
When I was 7 years old, I asked my mother why we had
to interact with other churchgoers, whom we did not even know,
and give them the sign of peace. I don't recall what her answer
was. For years, however, I harbored the thought that it was an
insincere act. I would automatically nod my head and murmur
“Peace be with you” at this part of the Mass. I didn't believe
people not related to me would wholeheartedly wish for me to
have peace in my life. Why would they even care?

Make an origami peace dove (search online) then attach to the
dove a small strip of paper containing your favorite quotes about
peace.
