Starting With Scratch is a block-based programming course provided by the CodeTigers and STEM Impressionists Program collaboration. Over the course of 10 weeks, students will practice programming on Scratch while simultaneously learning fundamental computer science concepts. Each week will be taught by two student mentors who will walk participants through different lessons that will overtime build their understanding of coding through the Scratch platform. Throughout the course, students will be provided with resources to further their exploration of computer science in addition to preparing them to continue on to other coding platforms such as Python, micro:bit, and HTML/CSS. 38. Before we make any changes, it’s important to make a copy of all
sprites we use! This way we remember what changes we made
To do this, we
right-click on the
sprite and click on
the “duplicate”
button
39. Now that we have two, it is important to name them so we
know which costume is which when we code.
We should name
them based on what
makes them
unique!
40. I will name the first one “NoSleeves” because her shirt
doesn't have sleeves!
Notice how
“NoSleeves” is doesn't
have a space! It’s a
good practice to name
items you code with,
without spaces or
special characters
like: @, #,$,!, etc.
41. Now let's use the other design tools to make the second
costume unique!
42. Let’s try to create sleeves!!!
Add a rectangle
using the square
shape tool:
43. Use the select tool to move the rectangle to cover
the arms:
45. Now let’s use the Fill button to change the sleeve color:
46. Use the eyedrop tool to select the color of the shirt for
the sleeve:
47. Now lets create the other sleeve!!!
Make a copy of
the sleeve by
either clicking
the copy button
on the screen, or
by pressing
Ctrl+C on your
keyboard
48. Now that it's copied, lets paste it into our costume!
Paste by either
clicking the
paste button on
the screen, or by
pressing Ctrl+V
on your
keyboard
52. Now we can name her based on the changes we made!
53. Let’s play with the other tools!
But don’t forget
to make a
duplicate after
every success so
we don’t lose
what we made!
54. Let’s change the color of her shirt!
The paint bucket
tool allows us to
change the color
of different
items to the
same color
55. We can color the sleeves and shirt separately...
56. Or we can use what we learned about grouping and
group together the shirt and then color it!
57. To group, go back to the select tool and hold down to draw a
box around areas you want to select OR hold down on the CTRL
and Shift keys and click the pieces you want to select
58. Once we select the shirt, we can directly use the fill button
instead of the paint bucket
72. For this final costume, make a copy of the sprite we didn’t
make changes to and drag it to the bottom.
We won't be using the sleeves or skirt we made.
73. Go to google and search for a clothing item you want your
sprite to wear!
77. The Bitmap format is different than what we have been
working in. This is because it can only change the color of the
pixels
Even the
tools are
different!
79. Select the erase tool (#7) and erase the background around
the skirt!
80. Because the background behind the skirt is all white,
instead of erasing it we can use the paint bucket tool
instead!
81. The slanted line means no color, which is the same as if we
were going to erase! this makes it much faster
82. Now that our skirt is ready, lets convert it to the form that
our character is in.
The Vector
format allows us
to use the select
tool which we
need to copy,
paste and
group/ungroup!
90. Look at all the fabulous costumes we just
made! Great job us!
91. All the costumes that we just made will be available
for you to remix in our studio, but before next class
we would love to see your work!
