The document outlines plans for a short film that takes inspiration from the 1966 Beach Boys concept album "Pet Sounds". The film will follow a young boy exploring love, disappointment, and alienation as he turns into a man. It may include songs from "Pet Sounds" to help set the mood. The film will focus on the boy's experiences at school and around town with supporting characters like his girlfriend and friends. The film is envisioned as a drama or comedy-drama, and technical elements like lighting and color will reflect the main character's inner state.
2. Inspirations
■ For quite a long time I have been a fan of music,
especially of the concept albums whose songs are
linked with each other. One of these concept albums
is released in 1966 ’’Pet Sounds’’ by the Beach Boys.
Unlike the typical albums which can be considered as
a compilation of songs, the ’’Pet Sounds’’ songs are so
well-linked together that even though the album
doesn’t have a certain plot, they are interconnected
to form a coherent narrative so the record feels like
one giant piece of work and also like a soundtrack to
the film. Its themes are young love, alienation,
transient nature of love, deeper ruminations of life
etc.

3. My Story
■ Taking some inspirations from ‘’Pet Sounds’’ I
started having some story outlines. At the
moment the short film is about a young boy
who explores his inside world by experiencing
love, disappointment, alienation etc. and in
conclusion he sees the world differently from
how he used to. This is a film of how a boy
turns into a man.
4. Music
■ Considering that the film is heavily
inspired by ‘’Pet Sounds’’, I’m planning to
paste some of its songs into my film so
they can help in giving a certain mood to
the scene in which it’s placed. There may
be copyright problems, but I’ll try to go
on the band’s main site in order to ask
permission or because I’m not promoting
my film for money than there should not
be any problems with copyright
5. Characters
■ In my short film there’s one
young male main character and
a couple of supporting
characters like his girl, friends,
strangers etc. All they will play
an important role for him and
have an impact on his
exploration.
6. Location
■ Because of the film’s length the
locations are limited to school and
probably the town (I’m still not sure
but I’m planning to have a scene with
a shop and the whole town itself) and
of course the school at which the
vast majority of filming is going to
take place. I’m still thinking whether
main character is a school boy or just
a young adult.
7. Conventions
■ Talking about generic conventions, my film is positioned as either drama or
comedy-drama. It’s conventions are going to be represented in the mood,
dialogues, narrative and even The Beach Boys songs (both musically and
lyrically)
■ For technical conventions because I’m planning to make a comedy-drama film,
the lighting and colours will depend on the inside condition of main character:
the happier he is, the more high-key and colourful the shots are.
