2. Performance videos
• Lots of music videos have performances of the
artists as part of the video- them on stage
performances (concerts/ Gigs)
3. College Teachers example
• One Directions “History”.
• This music video includes the band singing
directly to the camera, but also shows the bands
progression- showing them singing on the Xfactor
and being put together as a group, then showing
them doing small shows, progressing to there
Wembley concerts and the massive crowds.
These are real life situation, warming up and
fooling around.
4. My example
• 5 Seconds Of Summer- You like so perfect
• This can be shown as a production music
video as it shows them singing/ lip syncing to
the music in a alley type setting.
• It can also be used as a hybrid music video
because it shows both production and
narrative.
5. Spectacle
• For men being the led character in the music
video, the male is seen to be addressing the
viewer directly- seeing directly to you as an
audience.
• However it has been argued that when a
female it the led in a music video it is much
more to do with Laura Muvleys “Male gaze”,
they are suggested to be posed in “Sexual
poses” or wearing minimum clothing.
6. Men Spectacle…
• College teachers example… Sam smiths “stay with
me”. Sam smith is
show to be trying to
connect with his audience
• My example… Troye Sivan
“Happy Little Pill”. This screen]
Shot shows him singing to
The camera/ audience.
7. Women’s spectacle
• College teachers example… Miley Cyrus “wrecking ball”
showing a sexual nature as she sings at the camera
whilst swinging naked a points on a wreaking ball.
• My example… Britney Spears
“Toxic”, she appears singing
To the camera yet moving
In a sexual way- supporting
The male gaze part in the
Women’s spectacle music
Videos.
8. Narrative
• This is the type of music video which tells a
story which most of the time runs of the lyrics
of the song- for example, a sad song can result
in the narrative of a break up in a relationship.
Most music videos have a beginning, middle
and end- acting as a mini film with music in
the background.
9. College teachers example
• Adele’s “Hello”. This shows the story of a lost
love who she wants to try and reunite with as
she is missing them- trying to get back in
contact. It shows the story of a happy couple
but then going through a hard time arguing
and then the ending is them seeing each other
again.
10. My example
• Troye Sivan’s “Blue Neighborhood Trilogy”, showing
three different songs but the story is the same
continuing one. The story starts with two boys are a
very close friends, we watch them grow up together
and become closer and closer. We then see they
become boyfriends, which one of the fathers didn't like
and tried so hard to split them up. The emotional
aspect of this is very high as we feel connected to these
boys. The boys then stop speaking and one of the boys
tries so hard to fake his life to please his father- by
dating a girl. We then see how this affects the other
11. Ideas…
• With this research of three different examples of music
videos, I personally think a “hybrid” music video would be
the best one to make because I think it will have the most
entertainment aspect as the audience would be able to a
performance of a band but at the same time getting that
narrative of a story line. Even though my Narrative example
was Troye Sivan’s Blue Neighbor hood trilogy, I do not think
I would have enough time to create a three part narrative
of music videos however I do think that is a great idea and
concept. If we had more time maybe we may be able to do
that idea, however in the mean time, I think myself and
Megan shall just do one video of both narrative and
production.
