I write today in support of Mr. Andrew Zimnicki, outgoing Student Assistant for Technology in the Career
Development Center (CDC) of The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Buffalo. I have known
Andrew since October 2015 and, as his supervisor, I have become impressed with his depth and breadth
of engagement in the learning process and his maturing, professional attitude. This growth has been
invaluable to Andrew’s ability to meet the many expectations of our demanding student assistant
position.
Andrew was selected for this position because of his knowledge with a diversity of web technologies -
especially PHP, SQL, and HTML. His assigned projects have focused on testing and debugging webpages
on the CDC’s website and building new features for existing content management systems. The pages
he has worked on are scripted in both PHP and ASP, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and AJAX. Many of
the pages interact with data stored in numerous MySQL and MS Access databases. In doing his work,
Andrew proved an ability to take direction, provide leadership, and follow through. In many instances, I
have been able to give Andrew a set of parameters from which to work and then allow him the freedom
to produce. He has done well meeting deadlines and has worked diligently towards his goals while
communicating revisions to his schedule targets.
On many occasions, Andrew’s work required that he do research and learn new skills while working with
sessions, cookies, for each statements, dynamic-link libraries, and various database management
functions. He has not only proven resourceful in these instances, he has shown an ability to think
creatively – offering solutions to problems that had not previously been considered. His solutions have
been intelligently considered and well thought out.
Having been able to orient to the programming performed by over a dozen other staffs that have filled
the position, I have found the output of his programming efforts to be clean and clearly understandable.
In those few instances where I have not understood, Andrew has been patient and deliberate in
communicating his strategy and process. Also noteworthy, have been Andrew’s design skills. Visually
inclined and very good at using Photoshop, I have been able to call on Andrew to assist with altering
photographs and other imagery for use on our website and other marketing and promotional materials.
Andrew has been an integral part of our office’s success and it has been a pleasure to work with him.
Because of Andrew, SUNY College at Buffalo students and alumni, employers and their recruiters, and
our faculty/staff/administration have been better served. I recommend him without reservation.
Sincerely,
Phillip John Auman
