1. EVALUATIONTASK1: IN WHAT WAYS DOESYOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
By:Andrew Jensen
2. GENRE AND COMPARISONS
• The genre we created is thriller, within the sub—genre of action-thriller.
• Firstly, the films that my thriller gets some of its conventions are:
1) Gamer 2009, Lionsgate, directed by Neveldine &Taylor, Cast: Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall,
AmberValletta and Ludacris.

Farhad Mann (2). Cast: Patrick Bergin, Matt Frewer

Crowe.

4)The Matrix franchise, 1999-2003,Warner Bros, directed byThe Wachowski Brothers, cast:
Keanu Reeves.

5) Saving Private Ryan 1998, directed by: Steven Spielberg, cast: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon.
4. PLOTLINE
• Gamer’s plot-line follows main character John "Kable"Tillman, who
is a ‘player’ in a call-of-duty esque video game, except that the game
is in real life, and he is being controlled by a 17 year old gamer.
• ‘Kable,’ is a prisoner on death row. Should he survive 30 rounds of
“Slayer” (The name of the video game) he is freed from freedom.
• This is similar to our thriller, as our main character dies in direct
cause to the video game; he is ‘killed’ by the game, much like the
other prisoners in Gamer.
5. Gamer (2009) Our thriller
• Our thriller copies these conventions of a “real-life”
video game, but develops it further through
suggesting that physical death of the players, is
impossible- which of course is shattered by the end
of the opening sequence.
7. CAMERA
• We copied and developed the camera techniques used
in ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ We did this as we liked the
action-film genre conventions that it adhered to.
• For example, Saving Private Ryan uses a lot of shaky
handheld camera work. In addition to this, the shot
frames only a small amount. SPR ensures that the shots
have a large amount of ‘noise’ and have little headspace
to make the audience focus on the action in the shots.
8. Saving Private Ryan (1998) Our thriller
• We copied the various camera movements that
Saving Private Ryan used. For example, in the framing
of this shot, we deliberately only included a partial
amount of the character’s face, and made the shot
very narrow- only framing the affected area of the
character.
10. MISE-EN-SCENE
• We used ‘Call of Duty’ as a muse for the mise-en-scene
choices for our thriller. This is because what we were trying
to make it look like, was a video game like Call of Duty.
• We copied the same guns the characters in the video game
used, the costumes they used, the location and sets and the
nationalities of the character:
• The main ‘bad guys,’ in Call of Duty are Russian. Due to this,
we used real Russian people, for most of our villains.
14. TITLE TYPE AND FONT
• ‘Black Mirror’, aTV show about the potential
malevolence of technology in the future, uses a
black background, with white text in full caps.
• Additionally, the title for black mirror flashes, our
thriller copies and develops this.
15. • Our title for our thriller copies this exactly, but
develops it further by implementing sound as well.
(The GIF of the our title can be found on the post-
production, editing post)
16. DEVELOPMENT AND
CHALLENGING OF CONVENTIONS
• The three types of media which have been copied and developed, holistically, help
develop and emphasize the conventions of real life media.
• I feel that the conventions of real life media shown in my above picked examples,
are shown, developed and to an extent, challenged in my thriller.
• I believe that our thriller challenges some narrative conventions that are shown in
Gamer. For example, Gamer instantly tells the audience that the main character is
in a video game. In our thriller, this is a plot twist, and only discovered at the end.
• However, a large amount of camera techniques, editing and mise-en-scene from
Gamer and Saving Private Ryan have been employed by our thriller. Due to this, I
believe that our thriller develops and follows conventions of real life media.
