According to Plato, the person who should be selected to be the guardian of the city
should be a philosopher or philosopher king. Based on the Plato’s argument on the question of
justice, considers ideal polis as a collective entity for self-governance which requires proper
relationship between the structures for the attainment of justice. In this regard, Plato argues that
that the philosopher king should be the ruler because by virtue of being a philosopher, such king
or guardian of the city will be able to discover the ideals polis. As such, the beautiful city or
‘Kallipolis is can only e just if political ruler or the guardian depend on the knowledge which a
philosopher king must possess.
According to Socrates, those who should become the guardian of the city should by
nature be philosophic, strong, swift and spirited. The guardian should be those who love
knowledge or learning, have noble character and be able to determine what is familiar and
foreign through application of their own knowledge. A philosopher king should be a lover of
wisdom and not should gather administrative experiences and have dislike for wealth. , he should

problem posed by guardians who are philosopher is corrected by maintaining an equilibrium
between power and knowledge because both go hand in hand. The ability to combine
fearlessness and knowledge is solve through the component of the soul and the ability to have
truth knowledge which a philosopher king can expressed through his ability to dispensed loyalty.

citizens that he leads.

possesses characteristics such as keenness, the ability to pursue and catch whatever it sees, have

can be tempted to believe that thy are all=knowing. This can make them to be more aggressive
and cruel in dispensing justice. Finding the right person to be the philosopher leader can be a
challenge particularly to the police. While application of wisdom is necessary in leadership, it is
also important for the Plato’s argument to incorporate natural instinct while dispensing justice.
Leader should allow input of other to incorporate into their own wisdom while giving justice.
