Obituary - Elvin Lee Pauls
Elvin Lee Pauls, 86, of Piedmont, MO,
passed away Thursday, June 8, 2023, at
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Elvin was a loving father, an adopted
grandpa, beloved brother, and devoted
friend. He proudly served in the United
States Army. He married Ann Louise
Casey, and they were blessed with one
son. Elvin received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering at
the University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked for the US
Army Corps of Engineers for many years in St. Louis, Chicago,
and Washington DC. He also worked for McDonnell Douglas,
where he helped to develop an innovative ejector seat used
in fighter planes the world over.
Elvin was of the Lutheran faith. After retirement, he
traveled extensively. Elvin’s favorite place was Germany.
His favorite pastime was working his business, Paul’s Salers
Cattle. He enjoyed raising his Salers cattle. He enjoyed
carpentry as well. He built his farm home himself and
enjoyed playing chess with his friends. Elvin was a caring,
compassionate person and was always ready to help anyone
in need.
Obituary - Kent Lane Phifer
Kent Lane Phifer was born January
5, 1949, and left this world on May 29,
2023. He was born in Ainsworth, NE to
Bernard and Meneda (Zoerb) Phifer. Kent
was the fifth of six Phifer children. The
family moved to Mason City, NE where
Kent spent his childhood years ranching
with his family, raising and showing Hereford cattle. Kent
graduated from Broken Bow High School after the Mason
City High School shut down. He attended the University
of Nebraska, where he was a member of the rodeo team,
before returning home to Mason City.
Kent married Elizabeth (Becky) Knight in 1970 and
together they welcomed three children, Ty, Tana and Tari,
before later divorcing. His passion for raising and showing
cattle led him to live and work in various locations from
Roscoe, MT to Leoti, KS before returning to the Phifer
homestead in Mason City in 1994. Kent remained in Mason
City until 2017, before ultimately retiring to Loveland, CO.
Anyone who met Kent will always remember his ice blue
eyes and his strong stature. His adventures showing cattle
across the nation and clipping production cattle sales for
large ranches always seemed to provide a story that he could
tell with a gleam in his eye and smirk on his face.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents and younger
brother, Greg. He is survived by his son, Ty, and his wife
Mary Phifer of Saratoga Springs, UT and their children; his
daughter, Tana Seward, and her husband Ryan, of Roanoke,
TX, and their family; his daughter, Tari Kirkpatrick, and her
husband, Tom, of Loveland, CO and their family; and by his
beloved niece, Jonnye Phifer of Lakewood, CO. Kent is also
survived by siblings, Bernie, Sandy, Marlis and Marilyn and
their families.
In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American
Salers Junior Association in his memory.
Salers Cattle Drive
Many of you
may remember the
Salers Sire genotyping
project from a few
years ago, when Salers
producers sent in sire
samples to get a genomic profile on herd bulls within our
breed. However, we know that female genotypes are just
as important. Similar to incomplete contemporary group
reporting, incomplete genomic testing can also create bias in
genetic evaluations. The Salers Cattle Drive genomic project
has set out to improve those genetic predictions in females.
This joint project with Neogen is quite simple: it provides
complete genomic testing for females at a substantially-
reduced price. The tests costs $25 each for the entire herd
which includes a genomic profile and parentage. Breeders
who submit cow weights and body condition scores receive
an additional $3 off per test which amounts to a 51% savings
off of the regular $45 rate.
Increasing the accuracy of EPDs is the primary benefit.
Cows don’t have enough progeny in a lifetime to even
reach moderately-accurate EPDs. Genotyping substantially
increases that accuracy value. For simplicity’s sake, it might
be easier to think about accuracy in terms of numbers of
progeny, also known as progeny equivalents. A progeny
equivalent is the number of progeny it takes for an animal
without genomics to have the same BIF accuracy as an
animal with genomics but no progeny. If you genotype a calf
at spring vaccination, the birth weight EPD on that calf will
be as accurate as that of a sire who has had birth weights
recorded on twenty-two calves. So, you will know more
about that three-month-old calf than you do a sire who is at
least two years old.
Criteria for Participation:
• The project is officially open from September 1, 2023
to September 1, 2024.
• For $25, submit for genotyping at least 90% of the
cows on the active inventory. This can also include
Salers
Cattle Drive
FALL 2023
8
replacement heifers not yet on the inventory.
• There is a $3 rebate if body condition scores and
cow weights are submitted at weaning. Rebates will
be issued as a credit to the membership account
once data requirements have been met and verified.
Yearlings will not qualify for the rebate.
• DNA samples must be submitted using Allflex Tissue
Sampling Units (TSUs).
• Payment must be provided in full with the
submission of samples.
• Cows must be recorded in the ASA database and
have EPDs.
• Additional trait testing (ex. coat color, horned/
polled) is available on these samples if they are
requested at the time of submission.
• Calves born in the current project year can also
participate in the project as long as 85% of the calves
are submitted, based on the active enrolled females.
• Once a member has submitted 90% of mature
cows for genotyping, they will be eligible to submit
replacement heifers annually at the research price
as long as Neogen continues to offer research
genotyping each year.
• This is a research project collaboration with special
research prices and rebates which are only offered
provided the above criteria are met and only
for the duration of the project.

Selling flushes on this
Dam & Daughter, AJP Tiana

Penelope 13D. Flushes to be
done in November 2023.
Our cowherd is built on structure from the ground up,
based on strong maternal traits with disposition in
mind. We love to watch our grandkids show, but first, we
raise functional breeding cattle, with showing coming in
second.
We make our selections with that in mind, taking a
strong look at the individual EPDs. We are in the process
of adding Genomics to our EPDs, and we hope to have
this available at sale time.
It will be a bittersweet moment to part with these
cows. We live in Northeast Kansas which is primarily
corn and soybean country. Our pastures are limited and
we are maxed out on grass. We have made the hard
decision to sell mature cows and keep the next
generations.

At first glance, the rolling foothills and open
vistas near Belt, Mont., seem more suitable for
filming Western cinemas than creating innovative
opportunities for western ranches.
But the latter is precisely what’s happening at
McCafferty Ranch, where a technological revolution
– which includes the use of Salers cattle – could
change ranching practices forever.
Joel McCafferty, a third-generation rancher and
owner of the operation, reflects on the family’s long
legacy in the rugged high foothills of Montana’s
mountain country.
“My granddad came to our ranch in 1926, and
we’ve been here ever since,” he says.
Big Dreams in
Big Dreams in
Big Sky Country
Big Sky Country
The McCafferty Ranch pioneers new technologies for growing nutritious feed in every season.
By Eric Grant
Born and raised on the ranch, Joel’s journey led him away to
work in healthcare for 25 years, but the ranch called him back in
2003. He and his wife took ownership of half of the original ranch,
while his brother managed the other half.
Then, an idea began to sprout that changed the trajectory of
the ranch. In 2016, Joel installed a hydroponic system, a technology
that grows crops without soil. He discovered that cattle thrive on it.
The next decade was spent developing a unique system that
now produces nutrient-rich feed for their cattle. In collaboration
with Woodworth Industries, the McCaffertys created an automated
hydroponic system that sustains several hundred head daily.
“Once you have this system, you have a lot of options,” Joel
says. “It can be a lot cheaper to buy a hydroponic system than land.
You can be on poor quality land, but as long as you have water and
access to reject grain or barley, you can make it work.”
FALL 2023
16
Montana’s environment and limited access to
grains makes it difficult to finish cattle, but with
hydroponics the herd was able to sustain through
last year’s drought without requiring outside hay. The
innovation overcame constraints with land and labor that
have since helped the family expand their branded beef
program.
Marketed as “McCafferty Ranch Beef” to a nationwide
customer base, this niche brand offers high-quality, grass-
fed, sprout-finished beef.
To supply their brand, the family finishes between 200
and 250 fed cattle a year right on the ranch. These cattle
come into the feedyard at about 18 months old weighing
approximately 1,000 pounds. They’re fed for roughly 120
days with hydroponically grown sprouts, which are mixed
with straw. Finished cattle are processed locally at Central
Avenue Meats in Great Falls, Mont. The carcasses are aged
for 21 days and are USDA inspected.
Though grass-fed and finished beef is not typically known
for consistency in taste and tenderness, Joel acknowledges,
because hay is not as nutritious for cattle as fresh grass. In
contrast, McCafferty Ranch cattle receive fresh grass fodder
every day, allowing for increased nutrient intake and weight
gain that is comparable to grain finished beef.
Continuous access to barley sprouts translates to health
benefits that cannot be ignored, Joel says. “That health is
translated into the beef product we provide our customers.”
And, because feed can be produced in a single building
instead of requiring hundreds or thousands of acres, it
significantly reduces land, water and labor usage — a
picture-perfect practice of sustainability.
Logan Gondaro, Joel’s son-in-law and cow herd manager,
emphasizes the impact of hydroponics. “We’ve almost
doubled our income with the hydroponic plant,” he says.

AMERICAN SALERS 17
To complement forage production efficiencies, the
herd’s genetics are carefully selected for optimum levels
of heterosis, which boosts health, productivity and feed
efficiency.
This approach led to incorporating Salers genetics into
the cow herd. The McCaffertys were introduced to the breed
by Dan Deichmann, a long-time Salers breeder in Hobson,
Mont. The family has used Deichman’s bull, Velocity, on their
cows the last couple of years.
The results are impressive: top-notch cattle that calve
easily, grow quickly, grade well, yield well and thrive in their
environment. With excellent feet and leg structure, the
family expects the Salers genetics will help with pasture
utilization.
The breed is also known as one of the top-quality carcass
producers in the industry. McCafferty cattle consistently hit
the high-Choice and Prime mark, a feasible accomplishment
with the Salers and SimAngus cross.
And while the Salers females haven’t reached maturity
yet, the family is excited for the breed’s well-known
mothering ability to benefit their operation in the coming
years.
Logan highlights the advantages of crossbreeding with
Salers genetics. “The Salers cattle have just performed
perfectly,” he says. “When they’re born, they jump right
up and suck right away. They’ve never had a bad day. We
haven’t doctored one. From birth to now, they’ve been just
perfect.”
With a legacy that spans nearly a century, the
McCafferty’s aspire to help other ranchers establish their
own branded beef programs and revolutionize the industry
with practices that align with increasing demand for
transparency, sustainability and high-quality meat. Joel
envisions a movement toward sprout-finished beef, a niche
market.
“These systems can give ranchers, farmers, dairies and
feedlot efficiency, feed quality, and feed stability like never
before,” he says. ““It has turned into a project, that we hope,
will change agriculture for the better.”

AMERICAN SALERS 21
Longtime American Salers Association
board member Gregg Jasperson knows a
thing or two about the cattle business. His
family has been raising cattle in the rugged
Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah since
1857. “My family was in agriculture right
from when they came,” Jasperson said. “My
grandfather and great-uncles expanded the
cattle business. They bought some of the
current summer range during the Great
Depression, and we’ve since bought back
some of the original Jasperson ground.”
Jasperson explained how he first got
into raising Salers cattle. “Dad and I were
both working together at the time. It was
1984, and we were looking for something to
cross with our Angus cattle.” Jasperson said
that calving ease and hardiness were the
JASPERSON CATTLE COMPANY:
Tough Cattle in Rough Country
two traits he and his father were seeking above anything else. “We run in
rough mountain country. We had already seen neighbors with Simmental
and Charolais struggle with calving ease, so we knew we didn’t want to go
down that road.” There was some trial and error along the way. “We’d tried
Herefords and had problems, then we heard through friends of friends
about Salers and decided to give them a try.”
Thick-hided and hardy, Salers cattle gave the Jaspersons what they were
looking for. However, there was a pleasant surprise as well: high fertility. “It
doesn’t matter what you’re trying to do, you can’t do it if the cows don’t
get bred. I think that’s the most important trait, and that was the biggest
surprise for us, that Salers are so fertile,” said Jasperson. “Once people use
a Salers female, with the maternal traits and fertility and all that, it’s really
hard to go back to any other cow,” Jasperson added that he has not had
to stay up all night babysitting heifers in over twenty years. “Salers heifers
literally calve like a cow,” he said.
Jasperson has sold his commercial cattle in Torrington, Wyoming for
several years. He explained that in spite of some of the preconceptions
buyers might have about Salers, he has had groups of cattle top the sale for

22
their particular sale day. “We’ve done quite a bit better in
Torrington than anywhere else,” he said. “Once we started
going there, it was hard to take less for them somewhere
else.” Jasperson sells some of his registered cattle at the
Idaho Salers Association sale and has for over twenty years,
but “most of them, cows and bulls, are sold private treaty.”
He has also sold registered animals in the Salers National
Sale and plans to do so again in the future.
When asked about the biggest challenge for his business
going forward, Jasperson was quick to speak on the recent
population boom in Utah, an unfortunate side effect of living
in a land of such tremendous natural beauty. “We’ve set up
agriculture zones and bought ground that’s closer and sold
ground that’s farther away. The goal is to keep it going.”
Jasperson has enjoyed his time as a member of the
board of directors. “I’ve really liked getting to know other
breeders and seeing how it’s done in different places in
the country.” He added, “I’ve met a lot of people, and it’s
interesting how there’s Salers from Virginia to California,
and they’re all in a different environment.” Jasperson’s
experiences with Salers breeders from across the US speak
to the adaptability and ruggedness of Salers cattle. “People
don’t realize it, you know, Salers are good rough-range cattle
but they’ll work anywhere. There’s a lot of things that make
them competitive in different places.”
Jasperson stated that his greatest accomplishment as a
member of the board of directors is simply continuing the
good work that happened before him. “I guess I’ve helped
carry on with things that other board members have done.
We’ve had a lot of good board members over the years, and
I’ve tried to carry on what other board members have done,”
he said. “Just surviving is an accomplishment, I think.”
As a member of the Board, Jasperson has a good insight
into issues the breed as a whole may face in the future. He
believes that keeping up with technology will be a struggle.
He added that “just getting the word out” is another big
obstacle. “It’s hard to not get drowned out by the bigger
voices,” he said. Fortunately for Salers, “more people accept
them now—the reputation for being wild has faded—and
topping big markets like Torrington and winning shows has
made a lot of progress.”
“Salers cattle are real
competitive. If we get the
opportunity for people
to learn about our breed,
that’s all we need to do.”
- Gregg Jasperson
Another challenge is getting young people interested
in the breed. “Basically, we’ve solved the disposition
problem,” he said. Now it’s just a matter of getting the word
out. “In the past, when we’ve picked up buyers, they’re
usually people who’ve had Salers before,” he said. “Young
people don’t have experience with Salers. There are lots of
advantages with Salers. People just need to try them.”
Jasperson believes the quality of people involved in the
breed will help expand the popularity of Salers cattle going
forward. “There’s more good cattlemen in the Salers breed,”
he said. “Good cattlemen who aren’t just looking for show
cattle. Real cattlemen are going to change the breed in a
better way. That’s the kind of people we’ll attract.”

Obituary - Kent Lane Phifer Kent Lane Phifer was born January 5, 1949, and left this world on May 29, 2023. He was born in Ainsworth, NE to Bernard and Meneda (Zoerb) Phifer. Kent was the fifth of six Phifer children. The family moved to Mason City, NE where Kent spent his childhood years ranching with his family, raising and showing Hereford cattle. Kent graduated from Broken Bow High School after the Mason City High School shut down. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of the rodeo team, before returning home to Mason City. Kent married Elizabeth (Becky) Knight in 1970 and together they welcomed three children, Ty, Tana and Tari, before later divorcing. His passion for raising and showing cattle led him to live and work in various locations from Roscoe, MT to Leoti, KS before returning to the Phifer homestead in Mason City in 1994. Kent remained in Mason City until 2017, before ultimately retiring to Loveland, CO. Anyone who met Kent will always remember his ice blue eyes and his strong stature. His adventures showing cattle across the nation and clipping production cattle sales for large ranches always seemed to provide a story that he could tell with a gleam in his eye and smirk on his face. Kent was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Greg. He is survived by his son, Ty, and his wife Mary Phifer of Saratoga Springs, UT and their children; his daughter, Tana Seward, and her husband Ryan, of Roanoke, TX, and their family; his daughter, Tari Kirkpatrick, and her husband, Tom, of Loveland, CO and their family; and by his beloved niece, Jonnye Phifer of Lakewood, CO. Kent is also survived by siblings, Bernie, Sandy, Marlis and Marilyn and their families. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Salers Junior Association in his memory. Salers Cattle Drive Many of you may remember the Salers Sire genotyping project from a few years ago, when Salers producers sent in sire samples to get a genomic profile on herd bulls within our breed. However, we know that female genotypes are just as important. Similar to incomplete contemporary group reporting, incomplete genomic testing can also create bias in genetic evaluations. The Salers Cattle Drive genomic project has set out to improve those genetic predictions in females. This joint project with Neogen is quite simple: it provides complete genomic testing for females at a substantially- reduced price. The tests costs $25 each for the entire herd which includes a genomic profile and parentage. Breeders who submit cow weights and body condition scores receive an additional $3 off per test which amounts to a 51% savings off of the regular $45 rate. Increasing the accuracy of EPDs is the primary benefit. Cows don’t have enough progeny in a lifetime to even reach moderately-accurate EPDs. Genotyping substantially increases that accuracy value. For simplicity’s sake, it might be easier to think about accuracy in terms of numbers of progeny, also known as progeny equivalents. A progeny equivalent is the number of progeny it takes for an animal without genomics to have the same BIF accuracy as an animal with genomics but no progeny. If you genotype a calf at spring vaccination, the birth weight EPD on that calf will be as accurate as that of a sire who has had birth weights recorded on twenty-two calves. So, you will know more about that three-month-old calf than you do a sire who is at least two years old. Criteria for Participation: • The project is officially open from September 1, 2023 to September 1, 2024. • For $25, submit for genotyping at least 90% of the cows on the active inventory. This can also include Salers Cattle Drive FALL 2023 8
  • 9. replacement heifers not yet on the inventory. • There is a $3 rebate if body condition scores and cow weights are submitted at weaning. Rebates will be issued as a credit to the membership account once data requirements have been met and verified. Yearlings will not qualify for the rebate. • DNA samples must be submitted using Allflex Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs). • Payment must be provided in full with the submission of samples. • Cows must be recorded in the ASA database and have EPDs. • Additional trait testing (ex. coat color, horned/ polled) is available on these samples if they are requested at the time of submission. • Calves born in the current project year can also participate in the project as long as 85% of the calves are submitted, based on the active enrolled females. • Once a member has submitted 90% of mature cows for genotyping, they will be eligible to submit replacement heifers annually at the research price as long as Neogen continues to offer research genotyping each year. • This is a research project collaboration with special research prices and rebates which are only offered provided the above criteria are met and only for the duration of the project. Flushes to be done in November 2023. Our cowherd is built on structure from the ground up, based on strong maternal traits with disposition in mind. We love to watch our grandkids show, but first, we raise functional breeding cattle, with showing coming in second. We make our selections with that in mind, taking a strong look at the individual EPDs. We are in the process of adding Genomics to our EPDs, and we hope to have this available at sale time. • 16. At first glance, the rolling foothills and open vistas near Belt, Mont., seem more suitable for filming Western cinemas than creating innovative opportunities for western ranches. But the latter is precisely what’s happening at McCafferty Ranch, where a technological revolution – which includes the use of Salers cattle – could change ranching practices forever. Joel McCafferty, a third-generation rancher and owner of the operation, reflects on the family’s long legacy in the rugged high foothills of Montana’s mountain country. “My granddad came to our ranch in 1926, and we’ve been here ever since,” he says. Big Dreams in Big Dreams in Big Sky Country Big Sky Country The McCafferty Ranch pioneers new technologies for growing nutritious feed in every season. By Eric Grant Born and raised on the ranch, Joel’s journey led him away to work in healthcare for 25 years, but the ranch called him back in 2003. He and his wife took ownership of half of the original ranch, while his brother managed the other half. Then, an idea began to sprout that changed the trajectory of the ranch. In 2016, Joel installed a hydroponic system, a technology that grows crops without soil. He discovered that cattle thrive on it. The next decade was spent developing a unique system that now produces nutrient-rich feed for their cattle. In collaboration with Woodworth Industries, the McCaffertys created an automated hydroponic system that sustains several hundred head daily. “Once you have this system, you have a lot of options,” Joel says. “It can be a lot cheaper to buy a hydroponic system than land. You can be on poor quality land, but as long as you have water and access to reject grain or barley, you can make it work.” FALL 2023 16
  • 17. Montana’s environment and limited access to grains makes it difficult to finish cattle, but with hydroponics the herd was able to sustain through last year’s drought without requiring outside hay. The innovation overcame constraints with land and labor that have since helped the family expand their branded beef program. Marketed as “McCafferty Ranch Beef” to a nationwide customer base, this niche brand offers high-quality, grass- fed, sprout-finished beef. To supply their brand, the family finishes between 200 and 250 fed cattle a year right on the ranch. These cattle come into the feedyard at about 18 months old weighing approximately 1,000 pounds. They’re fed for roughly 120 days with hydroponically grown sprouts, which are mixed with straw. Finished cattle are processed locally at Central Avenue Meats in Great Falls, Mont. The carcasses are aged for 21 days and are USDA inspected. Though grass-fed and finished beef is not typically known for consistency in taste and tenderness, Joel acknowledges, because hay is not as nutritious for cattle as fresh grass. In contrast, McCafferty Ranch cattle receive fresh grass fodder every day, allowing for increased nutrient intake and weight gain that is comparable to grain finished beef. Continuous access to barley sprouts translates to health benefits that cannot be ignored, Joel says. “That health is translated into the beef product we provide our customers.” And, because feed can be produced in a single building instead of requiring hundreds or thousands of acres, it significantly reduces land, water and labor usage — a picture-perfect practice of sustainability. Logan Gondaro, Joel’s son-in-law and cow herd manager, emphasizes the impact of hydroponics. “We’ve almost doubled our income with the hydroponic plant,” he says. The Salers cattle have just performed perfectly. When they’re born, they jump right up and suck right away. - Logan Gondaro “ “ “ “ AMERICAN SALERS 17
  • 18. To complement forage production efficiencies, the herd’s genetics are carefully selected for optimum levels of heterosis, which boosts health, productivity and feed efficiency. This approach led to incorporating Salers genetics into the cow herd. The McCaffertys were introduced to the breed by Dan Deichmann, a long-time Salers breeder in Hobson, Mont. The family has used Deichman’s bull, Velocity, on their cows the last couple of years. The results are impressive: top-notch cattle that calve easily, grow quickly, grade well, yield well and thrive in their environment. With excellent feet and leg structure, the family expects the Salers genetics will help with pasture utilization. The breed is also known as one of the top-quality carcass producers in the industry. McCafferty cattle consistently hit the high-Choice and Prime mark, a feasible accomplishment with the Salers and SimAngus cross. And while the Salers females haven’t reached maturity yet, the family is excited for the breed’s well-known mothering ability to benefit their operation in the coming years. Logan highlights the advantages of crossbreeding with Salers genetics. “The Salers cattle have just performed perfectly,” he says. “When they’re born, they jump right up and suck right away. They’ve never had a bad day. We haven’t doctored one. From birth to now, they’ve been just perfect.” With a legacy that spans nearly a century, the McCafferty’s aspire to help other ranchers establish their own branded beef programs and revolutionize the industry with practices that align with increasing demand for transparency, sustainability and high-quality meat. Joel envisions a movement toward sprout-finished beef, a niche market. “These systems can give ranchers, farmers, dairies and feedlot efficiency, feed quality, and feed stability like never before,” he says. ““It has turned into a project, that we hope, will change agriculture for the better.” g FALL 2023 18

  • 22. Longtime American Salers Association board member Gregg Jasperson knows a thing or two about the cattle business. His family has been raising cattle in the rugged Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah since 1857. “My family was in agriculture right from when they came,” Jasperson said. “My grandfather and great-uncles expanded the cattle business. They bought some of the current summer range during the Great Depression, and we’ve since bought back some of the original Jasperson ground.” Jasperson explained how he first got into raising Salers cattle. “Dad and I were both working together at the time. It was 1984, and we were looking for something to cross with our Angus cattle.” Jasperson said that calving ease and hardiness were the JASPERSON CATTLE COMPANY: Tough Cattle in Rough Country two traits he and his father were seeking above anything else. “We run in rough mountain country. We had already seen neighbors with Simmental and Charolais struggle with calving ease, so we knew we didn’t want to go down that road.” There was some trial and error along the way. “We’d tried Herefords and had problems, then we heard through friends of friends about Salers and decided to give them a try.” Thick-hided and hardy, Salers cattle gave the Jaspersons what they were looking for. However, there was a pleasant surprise as well: high fertility. “It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to do, you can’t do it if the cows don’t get bred. I think that’s the most important trait, and that was the biggest surprise for us, that Salers are so fertile,” said Jasperson. “Once people use a Salers female, with the maternal traits and fertility and all that, it’s really hard to go back to any other cow,” Jasperson added that he has not had to stay up all night babysitting heifers in over twenty years. “Salers heifers literally calve like a cow,” he said. Jasperson has sold his commercial cattle in Torrington, Wyoming for several years. He explained that in spite of some of the preconceptions buyers might have about Salers, he has had groups of cattle top the sale for By Kim Cress, American Salers Association FALL 2023 22
  • 23. their particular sale day. “We’ve done quite a bit better in Torrington than anywhere else,” he said. “Once we started going there, it was hard to take less for them somewhere else.” Jasperson sells some of his registered cattle at the Idaho Salers Association sale and has for over twenty years, but “most of them, cows and bulls, are sold private treaty.” He has also sold registered animals in the Salers National Sale and plans to do so again in the future. When asked about the biggest challenge for his business going forward, Jasperson was quick to speak on the recent population boom in Utah, an unfortunate side effect of living in a land of such tremendous natural beauty. “We’ve set up agriculture zones and bought ground that’s closer and sold ground that’s farther away. The goal is to keep it going.” Jasperson has enjoyed his time as a member of the board of directors. “I’ve really liked getting to know other breeders and seeing how it’s done in different places in the country.” He added, “I’ve met a lot of people, and it’s interesting how there’s Salers from Virginia to California, and they’re all in a different environment.” Jasperson’s experiences with Salers breeders from across the US speak to the adaptability and ruggedness of Salers cattle. “People don’t realize it, you know, Salers are good rough-range cattle but they’ll work anywhere. There’s a lot of things that make them competitive in different places.” Jasperson stated that his greatest accomplishment as a member of the board of directors is simply continuing the good work that happened before him. “I guess I’ve helped carry on with things that other board members have done. We’ve had a lot of good board members over the years, and I’ve tried to carry on what other board members have done,” he said. “Just surviving is an accomplishment, I think.” As a member of the Board, Jasperson has a good insight into issues the breed as a whole may face in the future. He believes that keeping up with technology will be a struggle. He added that “just getting the word out” is another big obstacle. “It’s hard to not get drowned out by the bigger voices,” he said. Fortunately for Salers, “more people accept them now—the reputation for being wild has faded—and topping big markets like Torrington and winning shows has made a lot of progress.” “Salers cattle are real competitive. If we get the opportunity for people to learn about our breed, that’s all we need to do.” - Gregg Jasperson
  • 24. Another challenge is getting young people interested in the breed. “Basically, we’ve solved the disposition problem,” he said. Now it’s just a matter of getting the word out. “In the past, when we’ve picked up buyers, they’re usually people who’ve had Salers before,” he said. “Young people don’t have experience with Salers. There are lots of advantages with Salers. People just need to try them.” Jasperson believes the quality of people involved in the breed will help expand the popularity of Salers cattle going forward. “There’s more good cattlemen in the Salers breed,” he said. “Good cattlemen who aren’t just looking for show cattle. Real cattlemen are going to change the breed in a better way. That’s the kind of people we’ll attract.” g FALL 2023 24
