Aims and Objectives

Curriculum vitae (CV) means “ course of life” in
Latin.
A CV is a written description of your work
experience, educational background and skills.
A CV is a typically a “living document” which will
reflect the developments in a professional‟s career.
How you present your skills, achievements and
ambitions in a CV (curriculum vitae) are key, so it‟s
important to choose the right format for the job you
are applying for your circumstances.
1. Introduction

A curriculum vitae(CV) provides and overview of person‟s
experience and other qualifications
It is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an
interview.
An outline of a person‟s educational and professional history.
A CV is the most flexible and convenient way to make
applications.
It is an application form that is designed to bring out the
essential information and personal qualities that the employer
requires.

 CVs are mostly used to screen candidates for interview
 CVs are the first introducer to the interviewer and explains
your complete background
1.1 Important of curriculum
vitae

1. Chronological CV (or traditional)– Education
and Training is given importance. The latest
qualification comes first – reverse order
2. Functional / Skill based CV- CVs are created
with concentrate on skills and responsibilities or
experiences. Usually meant for experienced
persons.
2. Main types of curriculum
vitae

A Chronological CV which is also sometimes know as a
performance cv is a effective way of marketing yourself to
potential employers because it highlight your career
progression and promotions with your most recent job list
first.
2.1 Chronological CV
Chronological CV
 Reverence chronological
order
 Widely used for corporate
sector
 Mainly used by individuals
with:
 Solid work history
 Few or no gaps between jobs

Advantages:
 Your job titles and the organization you have worked for are
clearly shown.
 Your career is „shown cased‟ and the progression can be easily
followed by the recruiter/employer.
 Your last job/school will be at the top of your chronological
resume. As long as this is something you want your employer to
see, a chronological resume is the right choice.
Disadvantages:
 Frequent job change are clearly visible
 Gaps in your career are clearly visible
2.1.1 Advantage and disadvantage of
Chronological CV
2.2 Functional CV
A functional CV is skill based and is written, focused and placed more
emphasis on showing your experience, knowledge and expertise. It is
developed and organized by your individual skills rather than your
previous job titles.
 Focuses on the skill set of
individual.
 Mainly used by individuals:
 With significant gaps in
employment
 A mixed employment
background
 Very short work history

Advantages:
 Shown skills that would be hard to see in a chronological cv
 If you have a irregular career this format will make more sense of things‟.
 New graduates can use this format to highlight their skills rather than their
experience.
 Useful when changing career
Disadvantages:
 Some employers find the functional cv difficult to interpret and are more
interested in the actual organizations you have worked for and the position
you have hld. Employers need this information to determine the level of
responsibility that previously had.
 Leaving out dates and jobs titles can raise suspicion about your job history
2.2.1 Advantage and disadvantage of functional
cv

1. Academic:
 Used for academic applications (graduate student applications,
scholarship applications)
 Usually more detailed
 Focuses mainly on academic achievements
 Relevant project and course mentioned
2. Corporate:
 Used for getting jobs
 Specific to the needs of the employer
 Focus mainly on work experience and relevant academic affiliations

3. Sections of curriculum

1. Name:
Must be the first line of resume
Bold
Larger than the largest font used in body
1. Address:
Current address preferable
1. Email address:
Use professional email address preferably with name
1. Phone number:
Preferably use both home and cell phone numbers
3.1 Header section

 Optional but highly recommended
 Statement must be clear, concise and to the point
 Bad: “ I want to get a job”
 Weak: “ to attain an internship in livestock industry.”
 Good: “ to attain an internship in the livestock industry
with detailed insight into genomic and bioinformatics.”
 Avoid being over specific
 Target the company‟s perspective
3.2 Objective section

 Education qualifications from highest to lowest
 Do not use high school details once you have graduated
 Must include years in schools
3.3 Education section
Experience should be listed in reverse chorological
order.
Position title, organization name, city, state/province,
dates employer ( include months unless this shows
big gaps of unemployment)
Describes specific roles in bullets
3.4 Work experience section

 Focus on relevant research experience
 Must include graduate levels research
 In reverse chronological order
3.5 Research experience
section

 This section should scream “I am a leader”
 Must contain all academic and professional awards
 May include extra-curricular awards
 Include a brief description if not self- evident from title
 Don‟t include hobbies or activities not related to the job or
your story
 Good to include leadership positions
3.6 Honors/Activities
Section

 One of the most crucial things
 Follow the requirement
 If not mentioned, then “on request/demand”
 Ask referees beforehand
 Use the best ones
3.7 References


Specialized Experience
Publications/Theses
Additional Training/Assistantships
Membership/Affiliations
Volunteer Experience/Community Service
Language Or Computer Skills
Continuing Education
