Eve-teasing
• Eve- teasing is one common
form of harassment that is faced
by a women whether she is young
or old, whether she is married or
not, whether she is tall or short.

What is eve-teasing?
The making of unwanted sexual remarks or advances by a
man to a woman in a public place. Eve-teasing, according
to philosopher, Indu Prakash Singh, has been defined, as
“when a man bywords either spoken or by signs and/ or by
visible representation or by gesture does any act in public
place or signs, recites or utters any indecent words or
songs or bailed in any public place to the annoyance of any
women”.

Where it occurs?
Eve-teasing occurs mostly around
colleges, hostels, schools, in bus-
stands, cinema halls, work places
and when women travel in buses
and trains. There are some acts
implemented by the central
government which we will
discuss in later chapter.

Sexual harassment:
Sexual assault or abuse is any type of sexual activity that
happen to female without her consent. It includes
• Inappropriate touch.
• Attempted rape or rape.
• Child molestation.
• Women trafficking.
• Sexual harassment in work place.

1. Inappropriate touch:
Any form of touch that makes a
girl feel uncomfortable, if
someone attempts to forcefully
hold your hand or any other part
of the body or even tries to hug
you without your consent can be
termed as inappropriate touch.

2. Attempted rape or rape:
Attempted rape- Fondling or unwanted sexual touching by
force.
Rape- The crime typically committed by a man by forcing
women to have sexual intercourse with the offender
against their will.
Gang rape- Sexual assault by more person to a victim.

3. Child molestation:
Child sexual abuse also called child
molestation is a form of child abuse in
which an adult or older adolescent uses
a child for sexual stimulation. It can
occur in a variety of settings, including
home, school or work in places where
child labor in common.

Women and girls are trafficked
within the country for the
purposes of commercial sexual
exploitation and forced
marriage.

5. Sexual harassment in workplace:
Sexual harassment is said to take place when one person
subjects another person to an unwelcome act of physical
intimacy, contact such as grabbing, brushing, touching,
pinching, Eve-teasing etc., Male in the workplace makes an
unwelcome demand directly or by implication for sexual favors
from the women workers. Sometimes women were showed by
her male workers any sexually explicit visual materials in the
form of pictures, pin-ups, calendars, any offensive books or
videos. Awkward jokes and sexist remarks of the male worker.

How women are portraying in the media?
Women in films and television:
In recent years women in films are portrayed
as showpiece or an icon of glamor. At the
same time it is purely for sentimental or
cosmetic purposes but nothing else. So in
films women are remarked as the glamor girl
images. They were used as accessories and
glamourous props.

Women in advertisements:
Most of the advertisements are focusing women as a sex objects
whether they sell mobile phones or soft drinks. The worst
offenders are advertisements of deodorants and perfumes
which show women running after a man only because he has
used some brand of perfume. Most advertisement try to show
that a women’s body is a fantasy object. The advertisements
treat women as a commodity rather than a human being.

Women in advertisements:
Newspapers does not usually address relevant issues for
women empowerment but highlights the news of rape cases,
women illegal affairs, love matters then some sensational news
of women. They instead of portray the women entrepreneurs,
leaders, successful professionals but giving the news of actress
love, marriage and personnel life by portraying them as big
stars or heroines of nations. They are the only celebrities
portrayed by the media.

General measures to control the violence against women:
The government making efforts to ending/ minimizing violence
against women by enacting legislations, issuing orders and
launching various women welfare schemes but their
implementation remains delayed. So awareness among women
is the right solution of these violence. Here some measures are
discussed

Foeticide:
• Marketing of medical equipment’s especially for illegal sex
determination and abortion should be stopped by complaints
• Campaigns and seminars should be regularly organized to
aware young couples about the importance of girl baby and
the laws related to that foeticide.
16. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Domestic violence:
• They must be educated and have no hesitation to call a
domestic violence hotline for information and supportive
services. (police or lawyers).
• The victims of the domestic abuse should talk to parental
family, friends, neighbours or co- workers about the domestic
violence without any prestigious thought.
• If a victim locked behind the door they should discuss code
words with their children or friends to seek the help of police.
• Any form of domestic violence take place they should be
mentally strong.
17. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Women in workplace:
• Planned domestic work and maintaining health by taking
nutritious food.
• Don’t get tension with family members, follow yoga, meditation,
exercise and take health care
• Be calm and avoid arguments with boss or co-workers if
necessary comes try spot their errors.
• Don’t take gossips seriously.
• If any sexual abuse takes place be brave and bold to take things
to the higher authority, police, etc.,

Sexual harassment:
• Keep children safe from the sex abuses and don’t be shy to
educate them with sex education.
• Give passcodes to your girl children to ensure that she is with
the person you know and teach them to shout and bite when
they consider the person is trying to do some misbehaviors.
• Teach self -defense classes to girls in schools, colleges and to
the women in workplace to make feel strong and secured.
• Avoid late night travels, movies, parties if unavoidable arrange
security in proper way.
19. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Portrayal of women in social media:
• Laws should be introduced and tightened by sensor board for
indecent representation of women in films also in
advertisements.
• Women organizations and associations should raise their voice
against portrayal of women in advertisement badly.
• Women motivational movies should be encouraged rather than
commercial movies.
20. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Apart from schemes, laws and
measures every individual
women should be well equipped
with protective methods like
being brave, bold, having some
equipment’s like small sharp
objects and pepper spray with
their bags along with their
cosmetics.
