Georgia Standards of Excellence:
ELAGSE3W6: With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding
skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
School Library Standards for Learners:
III. COLLABORATE
Work effectively with others to broaden perspectives and work toward common goals.
Learners work productively with others to solve problems by:
1. Soliciting and responding to feedback from others.
2. Involving diverse perspectives in their own inquiry processes.
Course Goals:
By the end of this course students will be able to:
Use Google Sites to display their work
Prerequisites:
• Students must have a school google account
• Students must have access to a device (e.g. Chromebook, desk top)
Detailed Learner Description:
A class of 24 third grade students will be in this audience. Third grade students are generally 8 years old and will
turn 9 at some point in the year. There are 13 boys and 11 girls. Four students are in tier 2 of the Pyramid of Intervention
and receive tier 2 interventions. These extra interventions are different from the rest of the class and also have monthly
academic checks for progress monitoring. These students are receiving these interventions because they are not currently
on grade level. Two different students are in the gifted program. One student receives “backpack buddy” services which
means they qualify for extra help from a community service project that provides food for students to take home on the
weekends in hopes that they do not have to do without food when school is out. The content area for this course is
English Language Arts (writing). The reading levels in this class range from first grade to fifth grade (based on
comprehension).

Learning Assessment:
The students will share their projects with me (the media specialist) and their classroom teacher. We will both provide
feedback and opportunities for improvement.
Instructional Strategies:
Direct instruction: Students will be given direct instruction as the media specialist models how to set up a website using
Google Sites.
Guided Practice: As the steps are demonstrated, the media specialist will stop and allow time for the students to complete
the demonstrated steps on their own. The media specialist will help them during this time as needed.
Media:
The students will be navigating through Google Sites. They will need access to a Chromebook or a desktop computer.
There will be YouTube videos and google search engines that students will need to be able to access. Students will need
to know how to use a Chromebook or desktop computer as opposed to an iPad or touchscreen tablet.
Timeframe:
One – 45 minute lesson
Course Scope:
Introduction to the course
Learning Objectives:
● Given instruction on how to use Google Sites, the student will be able to show their work using this platform.
Content:
● Practice navigating the site
● Identify how to make a Home page and at least two sub-pages
● Practice adding pictures and/or videos to their site
● Practice adding their writing to their site
● Guided Practice
Application/Reflection:
● students will complete a complete home page and two sub-pages before the course is complete
Approximate time for course completion: 45 minutes (and then follow-up when ready to share their site – approximately
one school week)
Communication:
The students will be able to ask questions during the work time along the way. The students may also email or visit the
media specialist after the initial course with any questions.

Lesson Outline:
Hook:
Students will be reminded of their upcoming wax museum project and asked for ways that they can display their written
work that they have to complete during this project. (Most students will share that they will type, print, and display their
writing on their tri-board as this is a requirement.) Pose the question, “what if you could create a website to display your
work?”
Essential Question:
How can I use technology tools to publish my writing?
Lesson:
Ask students who has used google classroom before. (They will all raise their hand as their teacher regularly uses
google classroom for daily class assignments.) Tell students that I am going to show them how to use Google Sites to
make a website. I will then explain that today we will be making a website of choice for practice and to learn how to use
Google Sites, but they will be expected to make a website about their historical figure for their upcoming wax museum
project. I will then show the students a Google Site that I have previously made. I will explain the different parts such as
the home page and sub-pages. Then I will guide them step by step in making their own web page.
First we will log in to Google. Then I will show them how to find Google Sites in the Google Apps “waffle”. The
next step will be to add a new site to their account. Once I demonstrate these three steps, I will allow time for the students
to do these three steps. Once all students have added a site, I will show them how to add a title and picture to their home
page. Again, time will be given for them to do these steps. Next, I will show students how to add two sub-pages (either
by creating a home drop down menu or added to the header bar) and how to change the picture on each sub-page. Time
will be given for this step. Then I will show students how to upload a YouTube video within a page. Time will be given
for this step. Next I will show students how to add a text box to their page and show them how to type within the text
box. Time will be given for this step. After this, I will show students how to upload a document saved on their computer
or from their Google Drive. Time will be given for this step. Then I will show students how to publish their work
(complete with giving their website a web address). Time will be given for this step. Finally I will show students how to
share their work in the view only mode and explain the importance of this. Time will be given for this step.
Conclusion:
After the students have been giving as much time left as possible to play on their websites and add the demonstrated
parts, they will be asked to publish their work so far. I will then tell them that they can continue to work on their websites
as early finisher activities in class, at home, or any time their teacher allows in class. Next I will tell them that in one
week (or before if they finish early), they need to share their websites with me and their classroom teacher. We will then
offer feedback and suggestions on their sites.
