RESOURCES
WHAT IS A RESOURCE?
# Anything that can be used to fulfil human needs.
# Example: Air , water , food , electricity , TV , cars etc.
# It has UTILITY and VALUE .
# UTILITY means usability of a substance.
# VALUE means worth of a substance . It can be economic
Value, artistic value, cultural value etc.
• Yes . People or humans are an important resource.
• They are referred as HUMAN RESOURCE.
• Man derives many resources from environment.
• Earlier human had not realised the utility of resources.
• Time and Technology has played
an important role in the classification
of a substance as resource.
TECHNOLOGY is the application of scientific
Knowledge to do something or make something.
Can people also be considered a resources?
Types of resources
RESOURCES ARE CATEGORISED :
*NATURAL RESOURCES
*HUMAN MADE RESOURCES
*HUMAN RESOURCES

Natural resources
 Natural resources are
obtained from or found
in nature.
 For example : air, water ,
land , sunlight ,plants
animals and minerals.
 They can be used
directly or with little
alteration.
Classification of natural resources
On the basis of origin
On the basis of distribution
On the basis of renewability
NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES RENEWABLE RESOURCES
TAKE THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO GET
RENEWED AND ARE AVAILABLE IN
LIMITED QUATITIES.
CAN GET RENEWED OR REPLENISHED
FAST.
ON THE BASIS OF LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT
Level of development
ACTUAL RESOURCES
 THESE ARE BEING UTILISED AT PRESENT.
 TECHNOLOGY TO EXPOIT THEM IS ALSO AVAILABLE.
 EXAMPLES: RESOURCES IN DAMODAR VALLEY IN WEST
BENGAL , NORTHERN PLAINS OF INDIA.
POTENTIAL RESOURCES
 THESE ARE NOT BEING UTILISED AT PRESENT AND WHOSE
QUANTITY IS ALSO UNKNOWN, THESE RESOURCES MAY FIND
USE IN THE FUTURE
 EXAMPLE MINERALS LYING UNDER THE THICK ICE SHEETS
OF ANTARTICA.

about NATURAL resources
Human made resources
 Human have to change the original forms of natural resources to create
new resources.
 This is possible by technology which is developed by man.
 For example buildings, roadways ,railways, furniture, books ,machinery etc.
Human resources
• People or humans are called human resources.
• Their abilities to use their knowledge and technical skills to create new
resources.
• People are useful to the society.
• People who are healthy ,educated and skilled are useful for the
development of the society.
• Education and health help people to become RESOURCE.
• So it is must for every country to invest in the health and education of its
people.
Human resources Development
o Providing people the tools to increase their skills and
knowledge so they can create new resources.
o It is the human resource of a nation which ultimately
determines the pace of its development.
Conservation of resources
• WHY?
• Resources are not unlimited.
• Reckless use of resources not
only depletes their quantity but
also affects their quality.
• Careless and excessive use can
lead to shortage.
• HOW?
• Careful utilization without any
misuse or waste.
• Conservation of resources
• Allowing resources time to get
replenished.
• Use resources in such a way that
we do not harm the
environment
Sustainable development
 When utilizing a resource, we must use a resource in such a way that
there is enough of it left for our future generations.
 This balancing of the use of resources and preserving them for future
is called SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
