4. Introduction to Phobia
Phobia is a irrational persistent fear of something
which might be an object or a situation. The term ‘Phobia’ is
derived from the Greek word ‘Phobos’ which means Fear or
Morbid Fear. It is used in the context of clinical psychology, as
a type of anxiety disorder. It usually defined as a fear of an
object or situation.

The fear of embarrassment
in front of people.
It is characterized as being in
places or circumstances that
prove to be difficult or
humilating to escape
Intense fear of particular
object that is harmless.

Fears involving other
societal members or social
situationsn, such as eating in
public and delivering speech in
the public places. This type of
Phobia may be subdivided into:
➢ Generalized Social Phobia
➢ Specific Social Phobia

Phobia
Fears of a single specific
panic trigger such as spiders,
snakes, dogs, water, heights,
flying, catching a specific illness
etc. Many people have these
fears but to a lesser degree than
those who suffer from Specific
Phobia.

Agrophobia
A generalized fear of
leaving home or a small familiar
safe area. It may also be caused
by various specific phobias such
as fear of open space or fear of
contamination (fear of germs) or
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stres
Disorder) related to a trauma
that occurred out of doors.
11. Symptoms of Phobia
▪ Feeling unsteady, dizzy, lightheaded or faint
▪ Feeling like you are choking
▪ Chest pain or tightness in the chest
▪ Sweating
▪ Hot or Cold flushes
▪ Shortness of breath or smothering sensation
▪ Nausea, Vomiting or Diarrhoea
▪ Numbness or Tingling sensation
▪ Trembling or Shaking
▪ A fear of fainting.
▪ A fear of losing control.
▪ A fear of dying.
▪ Feeling out of touch with
reality.
▪ Stress.
▪ Being overwhelmed.
▪ Anxiety.
▪ Depression
