Media Facial Expression Research
A facial expression shows an emotion that tells us about the character and
the way they react to the situation. It may also tell us something about that
situation. A facial expression can also show the character’s true feelings, this
might be portraying something totally different to what they are saying. (A
character may be faking being polite to another character verbally but a
strained face or the gritting of teeth will show the audience the character’s
true emotion.) An actor’s facial expression may reveal a subtext or deeper
meaning that contradicts what they say or do in the scene.
Trevor Millum-
Millum came up with a theory relating to commonly used male facial
expressions used by magazines to promote a product. These expressions are:
Seductive:
Eyes are less wide, maybe shaded, expression is
less reserved yet still confident and self-
sufficient, may also include a slight smile. This
expression is very similar to the cool/level.
Comic:
This expression is deliberately ridiculous,
exaggerated, the subject is acting like a fool,
pulling a face for the benefit of either a real or
imaginary audience.
Practical:
A concentrating look with the mouth closed,
sometimes a slight frown, eyes directly looking at
the lens, hair often short. Looking business man
like.
2. Catalogue:
A natural look as that of a dummy, waxlike and
artificial. the features may be in any position,
however will most likely be with their eyes open
wide and a smile, but the look remains vacant and
empty as if their personality has been removed.
Carefree
Showing an active, healthy, vibrant, outdoor guy.
Showing the male to be often smiling or grinning.
Majorie Ferguson-

Not smiling, two people. Shows availability.
Chocolate Box:
The “chocolate box” facial expression shows
innocence and kindness through a friendly, warm
smile. The name “chocolate box” suggests this.
3. Invitational:
This shows mischief and mystery. This pose
usually has the model facing away and a slight hint
of a smile.
Super Smiler:
This shows an arrogant “look at me” attitude through a care-free,
toothy smile.
