FAILURE CRITERIA FOR NON-BRITTLE MATERIALS.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of failure criteria is to predict or estimate the failure/yield of
machine parts and structural members. During the later part of the 19th century
and continuing up to the present, a number of basic failure theories were
proposed and tested on a few materials. Most of the theories were based on the
assumption that failure occurs when some physical variable such as stress,
strain, or energy reaches a limiting value. A considerable number of theories
have been proposed, these theories are discussed below.
RANKINE’S CRITERIA
The maximum normal stress criterion also known as Rankine’s criterion
is based on the Maximum normal stress theory.Applied satisfactorily tomany
brittle materials. According to this theory failure occurs when the maximum
principal stress reaches the ultimate strength of the material for simple tension
The maximum stress criterion states that failure occurs when the maximum
(normal) principal stress reaches either the uniaxial tension strength σt, or the
uniaxial compression strength σc
-c < {1, 2} < t
where σ1 and σ2 are the principal stresses for 2D stress.
Graphically, the maximum stress criterion requires that the two principal
stresses lie within the green zone depicted below
MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS CRITERION OR TRESCA CRITERIA
The maximum shear stress criterion, also known as Tresca's or Guest's
criterion, is often used to predict the yielding of ductile materials. And it is
Applied satisfactorily to ductile materials, the theory is based on the concept of
limiting shearing stress at which failure occurs.
Failure by yielding in a more complicated loading situation is assumed to occur
when the maximum shearing stress in the material reaches a value equal to the
maximum shearing stress in a tension test at yield.
Yield in ductile materials is usually caused by the slippage of crystal planes
along the maximum shear stress surface. Therefore, a given point in the body is
considered safe as long as the maximum shear stress at that point is under the
yield shear stress sy obtained from a uniaxial tensile test.
This yield criterion gives good agreement with experimental results for ductile
materials; because of its simplicity, it is the most often used yield theory. The
main objection to this theory is that it ignores the possible effect of the
intermediate principal stress, σ2. However, only one other theory, the maximum
distortional strain energy theory, predicts yielding better than does the
Trescatheory, and the differences between the two theories are rarely more than
15%.
Failure is predicted when any of the three shear stresses corresponding to the
principal stresses, σ1,2, equals or exceeds the shear stress corresponding to the
yield strength, σyp, of the material in uniaxial tension or compression
Graphically, the maximum shear stress criterion requires that the two principal
stresses be within the green zone indicated below.
MAXIMUM STRAIN ENERGY CRITERIA
It is Applicable to many types of materials, the theory predicts failure or
inelastic action at a point when the strain energy per unit volume exceeds a
specified limit. It predicts the failure of a specimen subjected toany combination
of loads when the strainenergy per unit volume of any portion of thestressed
member reaches the failure value ofstrain energy per unit volume as
determinedfrom an axial or compression test of the samematerial.
The total strain energy per unit volume isgiven by the sum of the energy
componentdue to three principal stresses and strains.
For a 3 dimensional state of stresssystem the total strain energy Ut per
unitvolume in equal to the total work done bythe system and given by the
equation
For a 2 dimensional state of stresssystem
According to this theory the materials failswhen this energy equals to the
limiting energy
This is an equation of ellipse with axes at 450
.
Graphically, the maximum strain energy criterion for 2D case is indicated
below.
VON MISES OR DISTORTION ENERGY CRITERIA
The Von Mises Criterion (1913), also known as the maximum distortion
energy criterion, is often used to estimate the yield of ductile materials. The
theory is based on a limiting energy of distortion, i.e. energy associated with
shear strains.Strain energy can be separated into energy associated with volume
change and energy associated with distortion of the body. The maximum
distortion energy failure theory assumes failure by yielding in a more
complicated loading situation to occur when the distortion energy in the
material reaches the same value as in a tension test at yield. This theory provides
the best agreement between experiment and theory and, along the Tresca theory,
is very widely used today.
Failure is predicted when the distortional energy associated with the
principal stresses, σ1,2, equals or exceeds the distortional energy corresponding
to that for the yield strength, σyp, of the material in uniaxial tension or
compression.
Mathematically, this is expressed as,
In the cases of plane stress, = 0 The von Mises criterion reduces to
This equation represents a principal stress ellipse as illustrated in the following
figure,
Also
shown on the figure is the maximum shear stress criterion (dashed line). This
theory is more conservative than the von Mises criterion since it lies inside the
von Mises ellipse. In addition to bounding the principal stresses to prevent
ductile failure, the von Mises criterion also gives a reasonable estimation of
fatigue failure, especially in cases of repeated tensile and tensile-shear loading.
MOHR’S CRITERIA
The Mohr Theory of Failure, also known as the Coulomb-Mohr criterion
or internal-friction theory, is based on the famous Mohr's Circle. Mohr's theory
is often used in predicting the failure of brittle materials, and is applied to cases
of 2D stress.Mohr's theory suggests that failure occurs when Mohr's Circle at a
point in the body exceeds the envelope created by the two Mohr's circles for
uniaxial tensile strength and uniaxial compression strength. This envelope is
shown in the figure below
The left circle is for uniaxial compression at the limiting compression stress sc
of the material. Likewise, the right circle is for uniaxial tension at the limiting
tension stress t. The middle Mohr's Circle on the figure (dash-dot-dash line)
represents the maximum allowable stress for an intermediate stress state.
All intermediate stress states fall into one of the four categories in the following
table. Each case defines the maximum allowable values for the two principal
stresses to avoid failure.
Case Principal Stresses
Criterion
requirements
1 Both in tension 1 > 0, 2 > 0 1 < t, 2 < t
2 Both in compression 1 < 0, 2 < 0 1 > -c, 2 > -c
3 1 in tension, 2 in compression 1 > 0, 2 < 0
4 1 in compression, 2 in tension 1 < 0, 2 > 0
Graphically, Mohr's theory requires that the two principal stresses lie within the
green zone depicted below
Also shown on the figure is the maximum stress criterion (dashed line). This
theory is less conservative than Mohr's theory since it lies outside Mohr's
boundary.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION The purpose of failure criteria is to predict or estimate the failure/yield of machine parts and structural members. During the later part of the 19th century and continuing up to the present, a number of basic failure theories were proposed and tested on a few materials. Most of the theories were based on the assumption that failure occurs when some physical variable such as stress, strain, or energy reaches a limiting value. A considerable number of theories have been proposed, these theories are discussed below. RANKINE’S CRITERIA The maximum normal stress criterion also known as Rankine’s criterion is based on the Maximum normal stress theory.Applied satisfactorily tomany brittle materials. According to this theory failure occurs when the maximum principal stress reaches the ultimate strength of the material for simple tension The maximum stress criterion states that failure occurs when the maximum (normal) principal stress reaches either the uniaxial tension strength σt, or the uniaxial compression strength σc -c < {1, 2} < t where σ1 and σ2 are the principal stresses for 2D stress. Graphically, the maximum stress criterion requires that the two principal stresses lie within the green zone depicted below
  • 3. MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS CRITERION OR TRESCA CRITERIA The maximum shear stress criterion, also known as Tresca's or Guest's criterion, is often used to predict the yielding of ductile materials. And it is Applied satisfactorily to ductile materials, the theory is based on the concept of limiting shearing stress at which failure occurs. Failure by yielding in a more complicated loading situation is assumed to occur when the maximum shearing stress in the material reaches a value equal to the maximum shearing stress in a tension test at yield. Yield in ductile materials is usually caused by the slippage of crystal planes along the maximum shear stress surface. Therefore, a given point in the body is considered safe as long as the maximum shear stress at that point is under the yield shear stress sy obtained from a uniaxial tensile test. This yield criterion gives good agreement with experimental results for ductile materials; because of its simplicity, it is the most often used yield theory. The main objection to this theory is that it ignores the possible effect of the intermediate principal stress, σ2. However, only one other theory, the maximum distortional strain energy theory, predicts yielding better than does the Trescatheory, and the differences between the two theories are rarely more than 15%. Failure is predicted when any of the three shear stresses corresponding to the principal stresses, σ1,2, equals or exceeds the shear stress corresponding to the yield strength, σyp, of the material in uniaxial tension or compression
  • 4. Graphically, the maximum shear stress criterion requires that the two principal stresses be within the green zone indicated below. MAXIMUM STRAIN ENERGY CRITERIA It is Applicable to many types of materials, the theory predicts failure or inelastic action at a point when the strain energy per unit volume exceeds a specified limit. It predicts the failure of a specimen subjected toany combination of loads when the strainenergy per unit volume of any portion of thestressed member reaches the failure value ofstrain energy per unit volume as determinedfrom an axial or compression test of the samematerial. The total strain energy per unit volume isgiven by the sum of the energy componentdue to three principal stresses and strains. For a 3 dimensional state of stresssystem the total strain energy Ut per unitvolume in equal to the total work done bythe system and given by the equation
  • 5. For a 2 dimensional state of stresssystem According to this theory the materials failswhen this energy equals to the limiting energy This is an equation of ellipse with axes at 450 . Graphically, the maximum strain energy criterion for 2D case is indicated below.
  • 6. VON MISES OR DISTORTION ENERGY CRITERIA The Von Mises Criterion (1913), also known as the maximum distortion energy criterion, is often used to estimate the yield of ductile materials. The theory is based on a limiting energy of distortion, i.e. energy associated with shear strains.Strain energy can be separated into energy associated with volume change and energy associated with distortion of the body. The maximum distortion energy failure theory assumes failure by yielding in a more complicated loading situation to occur when the distortion energy in the material reaches the same value as in a tension test at yield. This theory provides the best agreement between experiment and theory and, along the Tresca theory, is very widely used today. Failure is predicted when the distortional energy associated with the principal stresses, σ1,2, equals or exceeds the distortional energy corresponding to that for the yield strength, σyp, of the material in uniaxial tension or compression. Mathematically, this is expressed as, In the cases of plane stress, = 0 The von Mises criterion reduces to This equation represents a principal stress ellipse as illustrated in the following figure, Also
  • 7. shown on the figure is the maximum shear stress criterion (dashed line). This theory is more conservative than the von Mises criterion since it lies inside the von Mises ellipse. In addition to bounding the principal stresses to prevent ductile failure, the von Mises criterion also gives a reasonable estimation of fatigue failure, especially in cases of repeated tensile and tensile-shear loading. MOHR’S CRITERIA The Mohr Theory of Failure, also known as the Coulomb-Mohr criterion or internal-friction theory, is based on the famous Mohr's Circle. Mohr's theory is often used in predicting the failure of brittle materials, and is applied to cases of 2D stress.Mohr's theory suggests that failure occurs when Mohr's Circle at a point in the body exceeds the envelope created by the two Mohr's circles for uniaxial tensile strength and uniaxial compression strength. This envelope is shown in the figure below The left circle is for uniaxial compression at the limiting compression stress sc of the material. Likewise, the right circle is for uniaxial tension at the limiting tension stress t. The middle Mohr's Circle on the figure (dash-dot-dash line) represents the maximum allowable stress for an intermediate stress state.
  • 8. All intermediate stress states fall into one of the four categories in the following table. Each case defines the maximum allowable values for the two principal stresses to avoid failure. Case Principal Stresses Criterion requirements 1 Both in tension 1 > 0, 2 > 0 1 < t, 2 < t 2 Both in compression 1 < 0, 2 < 0 1 > -c, 2 > -c 3 1 in tension, 2 in compression 1 > 0, 2 < 0 4 1 in compression, 2 in tension 1 < 0, 2 > 0 Graphically, Mohr's theory requires that the two principal stresses lie within the green zone depicted below Also shown on the figure is the maximum stress criterion (dashed line). This theory is less conservative than Mohr's theory since it lies outside Mohr's boundary.
