13. Kanban has 2 meanings
● Kanban has two meanings in Japanese. Both meanings are incorporated into
the Kanban Method.
● Written 看板 in Kanji (Chinese characters), kanban means “sign” or “large
visual board.”
● Written かんばん in Hiragana (the Japanese alphabet), kanban means “signal
card(s).”
● In Chinese, only the 看板 version exists. In Chinese, kanban literally means
“looking at the board” (and interpret the cartoon on the book cover very
literally), but the method was actually inspired by the signal cards system
used in Japan.
