2. Medicinal Chemistry
Branch of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Medicinal chemistry is the interdisciplinary research area incorporating different
branches of chemistry and biology in research for the better and new drug.
Medicinal chemistry is the science which deals with the discovery and design of
new and better therapeutic chemicals and development of these chemicals into
new medicines and drugs.
4. Medicinal Chemists:
1. Make new compounds
2. Determine their effect in the biological process
3. Alter the structure of compounds for optimum effect and minimum side effects
by SAR studies
4. Study the ADME of drugs
5. WHAT IS A DRUG ?????
Any substance which generate biological response with a particular chemical
structure and hold by the macromolecule (receptor) to generate biological
response. Drugs can be classified according to the sources that are:
● Drugs obtained from natural compounds
● Drugs obtained from semi Synthetic compounds
● Drugs made from synthetic compounds
DRUG
7. Drugs of Antiquity
Mud and salts are used for the wound healing
Fried ox Liver for blindness
Fat, oil, milk, honey were used
Middle Age
The use of Antimony salts as
elixers
HISTORY
8. The Ninteenth Century
● Expansion of Chemical knowledge
● Focus on the finding the active ingredients in the animals and plants (use of
the opium alkaloids were explored)
● Increased use of the pure compounds
● Birth of pharmaceutical industry
The Twentieth Century
● Discovery of sulfa drugs
● Discovery of Penicillin
● Modern Medicinal chemistry
