2. ● Insects come in different sizes, shapes, colours and habitats. Many insect
species, including ants and bees, work together in colonies, and their
cooperative behavior determines the survival of the entire group.
● This type of interaction has been likened to that of a single organism, with
each individual in a colony acting like a cell in the body, giving rise to the term
"superorganism."
● Some insects are social in their behaviour and do not live alone. Eg: ants, bees
and termites live together in well-organized colonies. The purpose of living
together is to get protection from enemies and to share food and work.
3. Characteristics of Insects
● Insects are small animals. The body of an insect is made
up of three parts: head, thorax and abdomen.
● Each insect has one pair of antennae, six legs and one or
two pairs of wings.
● They have their ‘skeletons’ on the outside (like a shell).
4. ● All insects start their lives as eggs.
● Most insects walk, but some can fly or jump.
● All insects undergo a series of changes called
metamorphosis after birth.
● Ants, grasshoppers, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles
and cockroaches are a few insects that are quite
common.
Characteristics of Insects
5. Body of Insects
Head
● Head bears the mouthparts, eyes, and a pair of antennae.
● Insects use their antenna to detect smell, sound, vibration.
● They have compound eyes that have thousands of lenses.
These help them to detect motion of things around them.
6. Body of Insects
Head
● The mouth parts of the insect can be different
depending on their food. Grasshopper has chewing-
type mouthparts, but other insects may have sucking,
grasping or undeveloped mouthparts.
7. Body of Insects
Thorax
● The chest of an insect is known as thorax. It has three
segments. It bears three pairs of legs, one on each segment.
● The legs of different insects are adapted to do different things.
For example, some insects can swim, some can jump, some can
burrow and some can grasp with the help of their legs.
8. Body of Insects
Thorax
● The thorax also bears wings. Most insects have two pairs of
wings, but a few like the fly have only one pair of wings. Some
insects like ants do not have wings at all
9. Body of Insects
● Abdomen: The many-segmented abdomen contains
the digestive, excretory and reproductive organs.
● Instead of lungs, insects breathe with a network of
tiny tubes called tracheae. Air enters the tubes
through a row of holes called spiracles along an
insect's abdomen.
