3. Survey Research
• Survey research is a method of gathering data from a sample of
individuals through the use of standardized questionnaires or
interviews.
• This type of research is commonly used in social science research,
market research, and public opinion polling.
4. • Survey research involves selecting a representative sample of the
population of interest and administering a set of questions to them.
• Questions can be open-ended or closed-ended, and can be
administered in a variety of formats, including paper-based surveys,
online surveys, telephone interviews, and in-person interviews.
• Surveys means to look at or see over beyond or, in other words, to
“Observe”.
5. Advantages:
• Including the ability to collect data from a large number of
people in a relatively short period of time.
• The ability to gather data on a wide range of topics.
• The ability to compare data across different groups.
6. Difference Between Survey Research and Other
Methods :
• Survey research is usually gather contemporary data, while
Historical research is primarily concerned with past data.
• In contrast to Experimental research, survey research does not
enable the researcher to manipulate the independent variable.
7. Types of Survey Studies
Exploratory Survey
• Literature survey
• Experience survey
Analytical and Descriptive Survey
Cross-sectional study
Panel study
Parallel sample study
Contextual study
Trend study
8. Exploratory Survey
• An exploratory survey is a type of research study that is
conducted to gain a preliminary understanding of a topic or
issue.
• This type of survey is typically used when little is known about a
particular phenomenon or when the researcher wants to generate
new ideas and hypotheses.
9. Kinds of Exploratory Survey:
Literature Survey also known as a literature review or a systematic
review, is a critical analysis and synthesis of existing literature on a
specific research topic.
• The “Purpose” of a literature survey is to provide an overview of the
current state of knowledge and to identify gaps in the literature that can
inform future research.
10. Experience survey is a type of research study that is conducted
to collect data on people's experiences with a particular product,
service, or event. This type of survey is often used by businesses
and organizations to gather feedback from their customers or
stakeholders.
11. Analytical and Descriptive Survey
• Descriptive surveys are used to describe and summarize characteristics of
a population or phenomenon. The goal of a descriptive survey is to
provide a snapshot of the current state of a particular variable or set of
variables.
• Analytical surveys, on the other hand, are used to test hypotheses and
explore the relationships between variables. The goal of an analytical
survey is to identify patterns and relationships in the data that can be used
to make predictions or draw conclusions.
12. Purpose of Descriptive Survey
• The basic purpose of a descriptive survey is to provide a
detailed and accurate description of a particular phenomenon,
group, or population.
• The goal of a descriptive survey is to collect data on the
characteristics, behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions of a
group or population of interest.
13. • Cross-sectional Survey:
These surveys are used to collect data at a single point in time. Cross-
sectional surveys are often used to describe the prevalence of a
particular characteristic or behavior within a population.
• Panel surveys:
These surveys are a type of longitudinal survey that involves collecting
data from the same group of individuals at multiple points in time.
14. • Parallel Sample Study:
A survey of separate samples regarding the same research program.
• Contextual Study:
A survey of a person’s environment, conducted to learn more about
person.
• Trend Study:
A survey conducted over a period of time so as to measure trends,
patterns, or change.
15. Steps of Survey Research
• Define the research question and objectives
• Develop the survey instrument
• Pretest the survey instrument
• Select the sample
• Administer the survey
• Collect and analyze the data
• Interpret the results
16. Survey Research Design
The design of a survey research study will depend on the research
question and objectives, as well as the characteristics of the target
population.
Key elements of survey research design:
• Cross-sectional survey design
• Longitudinal survey design
• Panel survey design
• Trend survey design
17. Survey Research cost
• Shorten the length of data collection
• Reduce the number of follow-ups
• Limit pilot or pretesting
• Make the instrument as short as
possible
18. • Use non monetary incentives to encourage respondents
• Minimize staff costs
• Shop around for the least expensive supplies and equipment
• Reduce the number of survey activities
• Minimize the amount of time each activity takes
