Asking For Opinion
To ask someone’s opinion, we can use:
What’s your
view?
What’s your
opinion?
Do you have
opinion on …?
What do you
think of …?
What’s your
opinion about
Indonesian
Idol?
I think it is the best
reality show and it
has fascinated
many fans around
the nation.
I don’t think so.
Some of them are
not able to fill the
most basic
requirement to sing
properly.
I don’t
know much
about it.

Giving opinion
To give opinion, whether it is agreement or
disagreement we can use:
I agree. I think so, too.
I know what
you mean.
You make a
good point!
I’m against this
idea.
I don’t think so.
I’m not so sure.
No way.
Asking for Agreement
• Don’t you think…?
• Do you really think…?
• That’s very true isn’t it?
• The new system is very expensive,
isn’t it?
• You don’t think it is a bit expensive,
do you?
Agreeing
Agreeing Strongly
• Absolutely
• I completely/fully/
totally agree
• Of course.
• You are so right.
• That’s exactly what
I think.
Agreeing Mildly
• OK. If you say so.
• Maybe they should.
• Should they?
• I suppose so.
Staying Neutral
• Perhaps. Perhaps not.
• Well, that’s your opinion
• Mm….
Clipart
Disagreeing
Disagreeing Mildly
 Why do you think
so?
 Well, it’s
challenging.
Disagreeing Strongly
 That’s absolutely
wrong.
 No, they shouldn’t.
Disagreeing Indirectly
You can disagree with others indirectly
by giving your opinion.
 It doesn’t mean people cannot buy cars.
Cultural Awareness
Expressing Disagreement
People in English-speaking countries do not express their
disagreement directly to show politeness. To make
disagreement less forceful, people often say “well,”
“actually,” or “yes, but” before expressing their
disagreement.
Example:
Opinion: The transportation system is
really good.
Disagreement:
I wouldn’t say that. Their service is deteriorating lately.
Yes, but their service is deteriorating lately.

Cultural Awareness
Asking for Agreement
Question tags is a smart strategy to ask for agreement
and start a discussion. To respond the questions, it is
polite to answer “yes” or “no” followed by the proper
subject pronoun and its auxiliary verb.
Example:
Question: Commuters should
use public transportation to work
to reduce traffic problems, should
they?
Responses:
Yes, they should.
No, they should not.
