Topic- Attributes of Product designe
2. Introduction
• The features and attributes of a product are integral to the
product design process
• Product Design is the process of creating a new product to
be sold by a business to its customers
• Efficient and effective generation and development of ideas
• It is usually completed by a group of people, designers or
field experts
• Product designers conceptualize and evaluate ideas, turning
them into tangible products

4. Attributes in product design:
Symmetry, Unity in Variety, Originality and
innovativeness, Feel, Texture, Form, Smell,
Optics, Colour
Cheap-Expensive, Fragile-Robust, Handmade-Mass-
produced, High Tech-Simple, Classic-Trendy,
Delicate-Rugged, Feminine-Masculine
PERCEPTION
AESTHETIC
5. Symmetry
Can be produced easily in simple patterns
Design is mirrored along one or more axis by
designer
Such objects can be easily identified as
being symmetrical
More often seen as pleasant
Reading a symmetrical object is much easier
6. Originality & Innovativeness
• Our brain derives pleasure from
processing new and unfamiliar objects
• We are often attracted by new, unusual &
innovative products
• A series of experiments by Leder and Car bon
concerning the role of innovativeness in car
interior design
• Participants preferred the curved versions
to the edged versions
7. Colour
For many product designers the consideration of product
colour is often an oversight.
Consumers place visual appearance and color above
other factors such as sound, smell and texture.
Critical importance especially in fabrics and textile
designs
8. HANDMADE-MASS PRODUCED
Creativity & uniqueness in handmade products
It is personal, well made & supports an artist
Mass produced-more readily available to wide range of
customers
Time taken to manufacture a product is less.
Human erro r and variability is reduced
9. Masculine & Feminine
It is important to take the gender issues into consideration.
Gender identity is strong predictor of attitudes toward leisure
activities, but poor predictor of attitudes about products
Babies, puppies and overall cuteness –Feminine
Sports and action – Masculine
Flowery landscapes and trees – Feminine
Rugged landscapes and terrain – Masculine
