To design an ergonomic, spacious, aesthetic
furniture with storage facility and adjustable
features to enhance user comfort for
classroom activities.
5. Fabrication
• Search
– Pipe Bending is the Major task and it is not available in Our Workshop
– The criterion for our Fabrication is to do the critical bending
– We should work along with the Fabricator
– Should be nearer to our institute so that we can constantly participate
• Finding Fabricator
– We searched in Yeshwantpura and found only one pipe bending works (M/S
Keshava Pipe bendings)
– It is a general pipe bending shop mostly doing gate grill works etc
– Fabricator didn’t commit properly for both time and cost. The non
commitment was a big threat
• Changing Fabricator
– After we confirmed that the Fabrication will not happen properly, we decided
to go to an industrial area.
– In Peenya Industrial estate we searched for pipe bending (Plenty of them are
available)
– We found our Fabricator M/S Lifeline Seating solutions.
– Our New and innovative design which is custom made make them to think it
may be difficult
– We took the challenge of completing it and started the fabrication
6. Fabrication
• Changes in design due to limitations
– The 4 bends under the seat in the finalized concept was
difficult to fabricate due to the standard die radius
available.
– It is difficult to bend for such a small radius and also can
tear the bend
– Hence we decided to change the 4 bends into 2 bends
with ‘S’ shape
• Raw material
– The pipe is made up of CI metal tubes
– The pipe diameter is 1 inch and thickness is 16 gauge
– The writing pad is made up of plywood
– The thickness for supporting pipe is ½ inch

9. Processes
– Pipe bending
• The process of bending the pipe into desired radii
• A die is used to bend for the desired radius
– Cutting
• The pipes are cut into required lengths by a cutter
– Welding
• Arc welding is used to join the pipes
– Grinding
• The welded spots are ground using the grinding machine
– Sheet Metal working
• The seat and back rest are made up of perforated sheet metal
• The backrest is bent by pressing
– Painting
• Red oxide protective coating
• Spray painting (Double layer color)
– Wood working
• Plywood is cut using machine saw
• The laminate and plywood are pasted using Rubber solution
– Transport
• TATA Ace Truck used for transport

19. Chair Says it All
• Every chair has life every element has life
– I am happy that I am in the same form as I was conceived
– I think students shall write, them shall sketch and I support all of it
– I think of right handed people as much as I think of left handed people
– I also heard that too heavy are more at risk of many diseases, so I
prefer to be light weight
– I think every one has a right to feel free in a free country
– Students shall be students not dentists, not executives well I can’t say
much about that for I am humble
– I hate ugly things!!
– Also have you heard that IDEO says ever increasing SIMPLICITY is the
future of design? Well anyways you just did now
– And more than that I already have a prospective buyer do you?
– And of course I am one proud CPDM Chair
20. Lessons Learned
• The project has been a great learning opportunity for
us. The works and events have taught us-
– How being in constant touch with the manufacturer helps
in understanding some design challenges in pipe based
works
– How, many problems come during manufacturing of first
prototype
– How, the design gets effected due to limitations of
manufacturing
– How some errors shoot the cost
– How we can work in a team as a team
– How some clashes and arguments take place due to
various reasons and how to resolve them
21. Lessons Learnt
– How working in group can be enjoyable
– How to handle people
– How to work under lot of pressure and yet be cool
about it
– How can we learn from our own mistakes and
improve upon them
24. Chair Says Thank you
• Prof. Amaresh Chakrabarti it’s because of you I
am there, so you are like father to me
• Ashveen, Nilesh, Rambabu and Vinay for playing
mothers
• Mr. Shivakumar, Mr. Saravanan, Mr. Sippatulla,
Mr. Shankar for helping in building my writing pad
• M/S Lifeline Seating Systems where my skeleton
was made
• National Auto Consultants who gave me colors
• Thank you all for appreciating me
