Founded in 1915, the Institute for
Supply Management (ISM) has guid-
ed supply chain professionals within the
global marketplace, apart from entering
into reciprocity arrangement with ITC,
Geneva (a UN organisation) and PMAC
(Purchasing Management Association of
Canada).ISM India has headquarters in
Gurgaon and branches in major cities.
QHow does ISM train its
students in supply chain
management?
ISM offers a comprehensive
curriculum that addresses all areas of
supply chain and procurement.
Based on our findings, 16
competencies were identified to be
requisite: Business Acumen, Category
Management, Corporate Social
Responsibility and Ethics, Cost and Price
Management, Financial Analysis, Legal,
Logistics Management, Negotiation,
Project Management, Quality
Management, Risk, Sales and
Operations Planning, Sourcing,
Supplier Relationship Management,
Supply Chain Planning, Systems
Capability and Technology. For
each competency, sub-competencies
were developed. Depending on
thecompetencies and sub-competencies,
exam specifications were
charted for each certification.
The certification sets the student apart
as an expert in an area of his choice.
Examinations are held online in all
major cities of the world.Benchmarking is
a continuous quality improvement process
to assess internal strengths, weaknesses
and evaluate comparative advantages of
leading competitors, along with identifying
best practices of the leaders.
QISM’s certification
programmes are...
• CPSM (Certified Professional in
Supply Management) in co-operation
with ISM-USA
• IPSCM (International Professional in
Supply Chain Management) in
co-operation with ITC Geneva (A
Joint agency of UN & WTO)
• PDPP (Professional Diploma in
Public Procurement) in co-operation
with the World Bank
CPSM certification requires
passing three online exams.In addition,
a bachelor’s degree is required, or a
three to five years’ professional
experience for those without a bachelor’s
degree. The CPSM is the professional
credential that leads you into
the decision-maker role, compelling
you to generate strategic solutions.
The programme offered by ITC
Geneva covers the complete supply
chain as seen in the figure. To get IPSCM
Diploma the student needs to pass
18 modules. One can opt for
IPSCM Certificate by passing six
modules and IPSCM Advanced
Certificate by passing 12 modules.
PDPP Diploma is suited for those
seeking a career as procurement
professionals.
QWhat is the current
stage of professional
education for supply chain
management in our country?
To cater to the growing need of
procurement and supply chain profession-
als, many institutions have come forward
to provide specialised programmes/
training in the field. However, there is
a major dearth of talent, especially for
the lead positions.
To some extent, the reason for
this talent gap is the 'attraction quotient'.We
have MBA programmes majoring in finance,
marketing, operations and HR, but none
with a major in SCM.To address the missing
gaps, there is need to remove the silos and
integrate all activities such as procurement,
logistics, storage and distribution.
QHow do you envisage
the future of SCM?
The supply management profes-
sion has begun to mature in recent years.
In many MNCs based in India, it is no
longer looked at as just ‘Purchasing’ or
‘Procurement’, but as an integrated
process that spans across disciplines
and activities, providing both internal and
external linkages across the supply
chain. This awareness is also growing
among many Indian companies.
With major focus of the
Government on‘Make in India’, the above
profession is bound to grow.We view this
profession presently at same level that IT
was 15 years back. As this has great
potential to grow, this is the right time to
pursue this career.
Over the 100 years of its existence, the Institute of Supply Management
(ISM) has served as a guide to professionals in the global marketplace .
Krishan K Batra, CEO, ISM-India shares all about the institute,
curriculum and career options for professionals.
