2. LOCAL VARIETIES OF KOROI IN BANGLADESH
Sada Koroi
• Local/Bangla name: ‘Shil
koroi’ ‘Motor koroi’, Loha Siris,
‘Deshi koroi’
• English name: White Siris.
• Scientific name: Albizia procera
• Family: Mimosaceae
Kalo Koroi
• Local/Bangla name: ‘Kalo
koroi’ ‘Siris’, Jat koroi, ‘Bhut
koroi’
• English name: Siris tree, Woman’s
Tongue Tree, Black Siris, Parrot
Tree.
• Scientific name: Albizia lebbeck
• Family: Mimosaceae
3. ORIGIN & DISTRIBUTION
Sada Koroi
• The tree is native to Indian
Subcontinent.
• In Bangladesh, this species is
found in forest of Chittagong,
Hill Tracts, Cox’s Bazar,
Dhaka-Mymensingh Sal Forest
and more or less throughout the
country.
Kalo Koroi
• This tree in native to Indian
Subcontinent.
• This species occurs in most
parts of Bangladesh both wild
and cultivated.
4. NATURE AND HABITAT
Sada Koroi Kalo Koroi
It is a fast growing, tall deciduous tree. Bark
nearly smooth to yellowish grey.
It is a perennial deciduous tree. Bark is corky
grey.
Habitat ranges from monsoon forest, mixed
deciduous forest, savannah wood lands and
seasonal swamp forest. Commonly found in
open secondary forest.
Tropical to subtropical sandy river beds and
savannahs.
7. FLOWER
Sada koroi Kalo koroi
Sessile, yellowish-white, in numerous
small heads.
Showy, stalked, greenish to yellowish-
white, fragrant, in globose umbellate
heads.
Flowering Period: September to
October.
Flowering Period: March to July.
8. FRUIT
Sada koroi Kalo koroi
A flat papery pod, dark red brown in color, linear
oblong, 10-25 cm long by 2-3 cm broad with
distinctive long points at both end.
Pods are pale straw to light brown at maturity,
narrow oblong, 12-35 cm long and 3-6 cm in
width and papery.
Fruiting Period: November to February. Fruiting Period: August to November.
9. SEED
Sada Koroi Kalo Koroi
Seeds are transversely placed in the pod,
6-12 in numbers in each pod and
distinctive marks over each seed is
present.
Seeds are brown flat, transversely placed
with 3-12 seeds in each pod. No
constriction is present.
11. USES
1. As Timber: (i) Furniture making,
(ii) Door making etc.
2. Edible Use: The cooked leaves are eaten as vegetables.
3. Medicinal Use: Bark and root can be used as medicine.
4. Other Use: Bark can provide tanning material.
