2. TYPES OF TUNT (MULBERRY)
Three major types:
1. Native red mulberry (Morus rubra) in Indo-China region,
2. The East Asian white mulberry (Morus alba),
3. The southwestern Asian black mulberry (Morus nigra)
3. INTRODUCTION
• Local/Bangla Name: Tunt
• English Name: Black mulberry, Black persian, Small fruited
mulberry etc.
• Scientific Name: Morus nigra
• Family: Moraceae
4. ORIGIN & DISTRIBUTION
• The tree is native to Indo-China and is widely distributed in the
lower sub-Himalayan region up to the elevation of 2100 m.
• Mulberry plants are cultivated in the northern zone of Bangladesh,
such as Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogura etc and particularly in Rajshahi,
where Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute has
been established in 1962.
5. NATURE AND HABITAT
• Tunt is a deciduous tree, 6-9 m in height, slender but with numerous
branches; it tends to be a bush if not trained when young. It has scaly
bark.
• It occurs in coastal and warm, arid places, and is cultivated in
agricultural and garden settings.
7. BRIEF DESCRIPTION
LEAVES
• The leaves are petiolate, leathery, large
(5-16 x 5-16 cm), variable in shape:
whole or palmately lobate. The leaf
blades are assymetrical, broadly ovate,
obtusely dentate along the edge.
8. FLOWER
• Flowers are small,
sessile or shortly
pedicillate, regular
and cross-pollinated
mainly by wind.
9. FRUIT
• Fruits are 1.5-2.5cm in length
and 3 cm in diameter, black,
glossy, sweetish sour, juicy,
and very tasty.
• Fruiting season is summer to
late summer.
• The fruiting period can be
from 6–8 weeks.
12. USES
1. Silk production;
2. Fruits have good nutritional value;
3. Tunt wood is used for handicrafts, cabinet work and for sporting woods
etc.
4. Erosion control;
5. Reclamation of wastelands;
6. Animal fodder;
7. Leaves are prepared as tea in Korea;
8. Medicinal uses, etc.
