3. Introduction
Theleriosis is a protozoan disease of cattle, buffalo and other species of animals.
This parasite is transmitted by blood sucking arthropods particularly various
species of ticks.

Theileria anulata (common in Indian-subcontinent)

4. Clinical Sign of Theleriosis
 Enlargement of superficial lymph nodes(e.g. Pre-scapular)
 High body temperature about 104-106 °F.
 Sero-nasal discharge.
 Conjunctivitis
 Emaciation
 Anemia
 Coughing, restlessness, rough coat

6. Drug choice for Theileriosis
Buparvaquone is the specific drug against theileriosis.
It is a hydroxynaphthoquinone antiprotozoal drug related to
parvaquone and atovaquone.
It is a promising compound for the therapy and prophylaxis of
all forms of theileriosis .
Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is also used as the combined
therapy of theileriosis

7. Mode of Action
•It active against the schizont and piroplasm stages of
Theileria spp.
•It inhibits mitochondrial electron transport system of
protozoa
•Thus affect on the energy generation of protozoa
•causes death of organism.

8. Pharmacokinetics
IM injection bioavailability is approximately 3% mg/L after 3.17 hrs
Half life is approximately 26.44 hrs
Excretion is usually occurred through urine

9. Dose And Administration
2.5 mg/Kg body weight, in severe case repeat dose after 48-72 hrs

Side effect
Localized, painless edematous swelling may occasionally be seen at the injection site
Withdrawal period
Milk- 48 hours
Meat- 42 days

10. Supportive therapy
 Hematinics mixture to enhance
erythropoiesis
 Blood transfusion may be effective
 Vitamin and mineral mixture

11. Theileriosis is a deadly blood protozoan diseases of livestock.
Proper drug selection and right dose can save an animal from
theileriosis
