Domestic violence is a variety of abuse that occurs in the home between family
members or couples. The typical image of violence involves and adult perpetrator and a female
victim, often his wife and girlfriend. However, there are also women perpetrators of domestic
violence, and men are sometimes victims. Really, any violence done by any family or group
members towards another qualifies. Domestic violence may take many forms. Destruction of
property, psychological and emotional abuse, physical and sexual abuse.
Domestic violence and other type of violent relationships are based on power and
control. If one partner feels the need to dominate the other in any shape or form, it is
significantly more likely a relationship will turn violent. Research has shown that people with
abusive tendencies generally turn violent when they feel out of control. Minnesota, shows the
abusive and violent pattern perpetrators use to get and maintain power and control.
It is possible an abuser may have witnessed domestic violence during childhood and
understood violence to be a way to maintain control within a family.

pregnancy or a family member’s illness. The perpetrator may feel left out or neglected and
looks to find control in this situation.
Job loss, housing foreclosures or debt can increase the stress level at home, which can
lead to violence. Financial difficulties can also limit option for survivors to seek safety or escape.
Victims may try to leave the relationship causing the perpetrator to become more
abusive to maintain control. The abuser may abandon or insecure creating a greater risk of
abuse for victims.
Domestic violence is an endemic and social health problem. According to a study carried
out in 2009 by Human rights watch, it is estimated that between 70 to 90 percent of women in
Pakistan have suffered some form of Abuse. An estimated 5000 women are killed per year from
domestic violence, with thousands of others disabled. Women have reported attacks ranging
from physical to psychological and sexual abuse from intimate partners.
Physical abuse happens when a person uses physical force against another person. A
person can experience many different types of physical abuse in domestic life. Physical abuse
includes shaking, punching, pushing and kicking etc.
Perpetrators of social abuse prevent a person from spending time with family and
friends and participating in social activities. By isolating a woman from her support network,
the perpetrator is attempting to assert power and control over her.
Sexual abuse is any form of forced or unwanted sexual activity. The perpetrator of
sexual abuse may use physical force, make threats and take advantage of a person. Some
people use their wives as sexual activity for money earning. It is a worse abuse of domestic
violence.
Domestic violence is one of the most horrendous kinds of abuse suffered women in our
society. The statistics show that 85 percent of domestic violence victims are female and 15
percent of victims are male. Domestic violence can happen to anyone, it doesn’t matter the
race, creed, religion. If the issue of domestic violence has not dealt with in a manner, which is
sufficient, then this type of abuse will continue among all classes of society with no ending. We
need to stand together and make tougher law, which will protect the victims of this issue.
