5. The most familiar type of mirror in which we see our
faces is the plane mirror, which has a flat surface.
6. MIRRORS
• Mirror is a smooth
surface which can
change the direction
of light falling on it.
Mirror
7.
8. MIRRORS
• A piece of polished
metal glass or
polished metal can
be used as a mirror
9. REFLECTIONS
When light rays fall on a smooth
and shiny surface, like glass, water
or polished metal, the light ray
bounces back, it is called
the reflection of light

12. Difference between shadow and image
Shadow
• Shadow is formed when light
does not reach behind the
object.
• No light enters the observer’s
eyes.
• Shadow does not provide such
information
• Shadow is never inverted
Image
• It is formed by intersection of
reflected rays
• Image is seen when reflected
rays approach to observer’s
eyes
• Image gives more information
such as color, structure etc.
• Image can be straight or
inverted.
Editor's Notes
By definition mirror is a smooth surface which can change the direction of light falling on it such that it returns to the same medium.
So in the picture you can see the torch light falling on the mirror plate and then return to the eye
Now This is one question asked in Ncert book
A patch of light is obtained at B,when the torch is lighted as shown.
Which of the following is kept at position A to get this patch of light
A wooden board
A glass sheet
A mirror
A sheet of white paper
So in the question it is asked that what is A
Here you can see that torch light is falling on A and then return toward the screen B
So A is actually changing the direction of torch light falling on it
As we know mirror can change the direction of light falling on it
So we can say that A is a Mirror
Hence ans is C
Now, A piece of
polished metal glass or
polished metal can also be used as a mirror
Now lets understand what is reflection?
So
When light rays fall on a smooth and shiny surface, like glass, water or polished metal, the light ray bounces back, it is called the reflection of light
In the first picture you can see the torch light falling on the mirror plate and then return to the eye so this is reflection
Again in second picture, you can see mountains in Lake just because of reflection
And in the third one you can see refection of pencil from the polished metal surface.
Now When light rays fall on a smooth surface it is not called as falling light but in physics we say it as incident ray
So The light rays that fall on a surface is known as incident ray
Similarly, The ray that bounces back is called as reflected ray.
And when we draw a perpendicular to the surface means a line that makes 90 degree to the surface is called normal,
Here very interesting thing you can see that incident ray, reflected ray and normal all are meeting at point P
This point is known as point of coincidence.
Form class 6 point of view till now it is enough to understand about mirror and reflection, for in details you will learn in class 8th.
Still if you want to learn in details about reflection, I have given some links you can visit from there
Now the last topic what is the difference between shadow and image
