The Beautiful Architecture Of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi
A mosque of historic impact that blends architectural styles and embodies Islam’s message of
tolerance and peace.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one the
world’s largest mosques and a massive
architectural work of art that intentionally
blends different Islamic architectural schools.
It features 82 domes, more than 1,000
columns, 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers and
the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. The
main prayer hall is dominated by one of the
world’s largest chandeliers.
The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
built this mosque to convey historic
consequence and to embody the Islamic
message of peace, tolerance and diversity. He
intended that the Grand Mosque be a living
reference of modern Islamic architecture that
links the past with the present and creates a
place of Islamic science and learning that
would reflect genuine Islamic values.

unprecedented artistic forums with the help of natural colors, and the development of sophisticated
techniques associated with columns crowned decoration.

reflectivePonds:At night, the courtyard ponds mirror the mosque's stunning columns. Architects designed a unique
lighting system that mimics the moon's phases, with clouds projected on the walls in varying shades to match the
moon's brightness.
The mosque is surrounded
by rectangular pools tiled in
different shades of blue,
which extend over 7874 m2.
They reflect the mosque’s
magnificent arcades and
columns and become even
more spectacular by the
lighting at night.
6. The colours of the walls, columns and the carpet are harmonised in a manner that
transforms the mosque into an artistic masterpiece and a symphony of colours and
shades.
7. Chandeliers
Seven crystal chandeliers by the Munich, Germany-based Faustin can be found
in the mosque. The biggest is 10 meters in diameter, 15 meters tall, and 12
tons. The main prayer hall also has two smaller variations of the same design.
Each of these is eight tons.
8. Lunar illumination
The mosque has a special lighting system that mimics the
phases of the moon. It projects gray clouds onto the white
marble surfaces, with the clouds appearing darker when
the moon is small and getting brighter as it becomes full.
This effect is created using twenty-two light towers with
projectors.
9. Pulpit (Menbar)
The Menbar at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is on the right side with 11 steps for visibility to
address a large crowd. It's decorated with cedar wood, mother of pearl, mosaic, and white gold,
topped with a small dome and crescent finial.

VOLUME
The mosque has a large courtyard
(F) encircled by porches and ponds,
with four minarets at the corners.
Inside, there are three entrances
leading to prayer rooms for both
men and women (B) and the main
prayer room (A).
12. As for the architectural composition, it is a courtyard mosque, with a rectangular floor plan,
important dimensions. The total built area is 22,412 m2. Unlike the church of the West, dedicated to the isolated believer, the
mosque is built for a large body of believers. In this case, its total capacity is approximately 40,000 people.
In the latter, the kibla
wall contains the
Mihrab – niche in the
direction of Mecca,
the sacred city – and
the Mimbar – prayer
pulpit. The symmetry
of the composition is
slightly disturbed by
the position of these
two elements (the
Mihrab in the center
and the Mimbar to its
right)
