QUESTION ONE.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for twenty-six years by the
government of South Africa based on his political views. South
Africa governed itself under the policy of apartheid in South
Africa into two communities based on the race. Black South
Africans who were terribly impoverished. The white South
Africans were wealthy, well-educated, healthy and happy.
In the early 1990s, across the globe, the world was yielding to
the popular demand that the society must be fair, forced the
release of Mandela from the prison and later elected as the
president of South Africa.
President Nelson Mandela through his leadership, inherited a
nation bitterly divided across racial lines. On one side you had
the blacks, very many who demanded revenge against the
minority but wealthy white. On the other hand, you had the
whites who feared the new government would be corrupt, petty,
and interested only in the bringing down the whites.
Did Madiba choose on any side? Which side would you choose?
President Nelson Mandela did not favor the black or the white
side but otherwise decided to fight the unified South Africa.
Mandela decided to show the black colleagues that he was not
intimidated by the challenge but rather inspired them to
overcome challenges. He showed not to get into power and play
over who the leader is but persuaded the uncooperative team
members to take responsibility. Through doing this, they
thought that was their idea. Therefore they worked together.
Mandela’s leadership quality enabled him to use charm and
friendliness than confrontation and acting bossy, and it proved
useful. He treated ‘adversaries’ with utmost respect just as he
treated the black South Africans and therefore he gained trust
and loyalty of the white South Africans. In different scenarios
where interests became competent, he became open minded and
preserved the participation of everyone involved.
In conclusion, the leadership quality of Mandela demonstrated
that once you are given the role of a leader, respect the position
and don’t go too far ahead of your base supporters who put their
faith in you.
QUESTION 2.
Analyzing Mandela’s leadership performance under the
scope of these elements of transformational leadership quality
(Transformational Leadership Theory), his leadership ability to
change management fulfills these requirements. For instance,
concerning Inspirational Motivation, Stengel (2012), refers that
Mandela was publicly recognized as a visionary and charismatic
leader in management. In 1943, he and his friends managed to
organize a group to convince the President of ANC that
something must be done to prevent the ANC from being
marginalized.
His dream was shared by the ANC and was made then the
group’s dream in which each was committed to its
achievements. As a result, they managed to form a Provisional
Committee League and recruited new members to ANC
(Stengel,2012).
Additionally, Sinclair (1995) notes that Mandela had charisma,
an ability to motivate others to be the hero and to guide the
country.
In conclusion, Mandela’s leadership characteristics of
Interpersonal Skills in human resource management capability,
listening skills, clear and open communication made him
transformed his ordinary people into extraordinary people.
QUESTION 3.
Mandela was publicly recognized as a visionary and charismatic
leader through inspirational motivation, (Stengel,2012).
Through communication and inspiration together with his
friends, they organized a group to convince the President of
ANC that something must be done to prevent ANC from being
marginalized. It became group’s team vision in which everyone
was committed to its achievement.
Mandela possessed the ability to clear and open
communication that enabled him led his people thereby
transforming them from being ordinary people to extraordinary
people. Great leadership consists of the capacity to inspire
others to greatness.
