3. SOURCE OF POWER IN LPU
Before knowing about power consumption firstly we have to know what
are the sources of power in our campus.
1. Solar panels- Actually in our campus solar panels are situated on the top
of 38 block. About 400’s of solar panels have been placed to generate
electricity.
2. Generators beside BH-8 generators are placed which come to use when
the light cut off.
3. Electricity from the government-Punjab government is providing nearly 4
mega watt of electricity per month.
4. Total power consumed in our campus costs approximately 2 crore per
month in our campus.
3
4. INTRODUCTION
Power consumption is the total amount of energy used
in our household for different works.
The amount of energy used for household varies
widely depending on standard of living.
In hostel rooms the power consumed are basically from
lights, fans, mobile chargers, laptops chargers, AC,
coolers, electric kettles, hair dryers etc.
4
5. POWER CONSUMPTION DEPENDS UPON THE FOLLOWING
FACTOR:-
1.How big your room is.
2.The number of people living there.
3.The type of appliances.
4.Number of appliances.
5.When appliances are used.
6.How appliances are used.
7.Weather you switch off the appliances when not in
use.
5
6. CONSUPTION OF ELECTRICITY IN LPU
Mostly electricity is consumed in hostels than in
other blocks of LPU.
In hostels, most of the electric energy is consumed
by geysers , air conditioners and coolers.
Where as in other blocks of LPU , most of the
electricity is consumed by laboratory equipments
such as computers and other electrical equipments
which works on the supply of electricity.

8. DIFFERENT APPLIANCES THAT CONSUME
POWER IN HOSTEL ROOMS
AIR COOLER: These air cooler can consume
upto 4 kw-6kw per day for every 10hours
LAPTOP: laptop On 70 to 80 W 4 hours per
day 0.3 kWh Laptop In sleep mode 3 W
continuously 0.069kwh
8
9. AIR CONDITIONER
Now the whole AC package consists of 2 units.
The indoor unit which is called the evaporator and the Outdoor
Unit which called the Compressor. The indoor unit is around 100-
200 watts or say 0.2 kW.
The Outdoor unit consumes the bulk of power which is rated at
around 1000 watts or 1kW.
Hence the total comes out to be around 1.2 kW. Now, let us find
out the number of units consumed per hour by our AC. So total
no of units consumed per hour would be [(1kW x 0.5hrs) +
(0.2kW x 1 hr)] = 0.7 kWh
9
10. HAIR DRYER: Hairdryer 300 tO 10600 W 30 mins./day 0.03 kWh
KETTLE: The average electric kettle uses between 1.5 to 3 kilowatts per hour
(kWh).
IRON: Iron 750 to 1100 W - 5 hours per week 5.41kW h
10
11. METHODS TO REDUCE POWER CONSUPTION
Switch off all the lights and fans when they are not in use.
In LPU mostly we are using CFL’s and fluorescent bulbs
which consume more electricity than LED’s.
Unplug unused electronics and appliances: when you
keep an appliances plugged in ,it’s actually using up
electricity.
An electric heater left on high is about 1500 watts and will
use 1.5 units per hour.
11
12. Turn off the A.C when you are not in the room.
close your curtains to reduce the heat entering your
room.
Try to utilise natural light as much as you can.
Unused lights in the bathroom.
In LPU we are using electric geysers which consume
more energy in hostels.
Instead of those geysers if we use solar geysers, we
can save electricity in hostels.
12
13. BENEFITS OF CONSUPTION
One of the most immediate benefits of saving electricity is the
amount of money you will save each month on your utility bills.
Reducing your electrical use can also benefit your health.
Mostly electricity is produced by burning of fossil fuels and co(carbon
monoxide) is produced that is dangerous for the environment so if
we consume less power less fosial fuel will be burnt and it will cause
less CO in the atmosphere.
Demand for electricity will rise from 20 to 50 percent over the next 25
years so cost of the electricity will also increase so if we consume it
properly the cost will not increase too much.
13
14. FUTURE POWER CONSUMING DEVICES
1. Ultra-Efficient Heat Pumps
The Building Technologies Office is ushering in the next generation of heat
pump systems, which warm and cool your home by moving heat from one
space to another.
14
15. 2.Reflective Roofing Materials
Cool roofs coated with materials containing specialized
pigments reflect sunlight and absorb less heat than standard
roofs
15
16. 3. Brighter, Better Lighting
The future consists of… lasers!
A laser diode has a number of important benefits. In the first place, laser diodes are considerably
smaller than their LED counterparts. The fact that a laser diode can produce up to 1,000 times as
much light for only 2/3 of the energy means that it is even possible to light a complete house using
only one laser diode
How does that work?
Steven DenBaars(a researcher at the University of California) found the solution in fibre optic cable.
Those cables can distribute the light from a laser diode over translucent plastic. That converts the
powerful beam of light into a warm, diffuse glow. With only a few laser diodes, you can get light to
different rooms.
16
17. COMPANIES USING LASER LIGHT
1. BMW
It is a well known car manufacturing company and famous for their
luxurious cars.
In their recent car bmw (i8) they used laser for their headlights.
