This document details a study to determine the operating speed of vehicles on a road in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Researchers timed vehicles traveling over an 80-foot segment to calculate average speeds and then the operating speed for different vehicle types. The operating speed for motorized vehicles was found to be 15.22 mph. Level of service analysis showed traffic would be in a state of forced flow or congestion at this speed. The conclusion recommends introducing traffic calming measures to address delays and congestion.

Project Background
» To determine the appropriate locations for modifying speed
limit regulations
» Speed-profile models can be introduced
» Obtaining driver attitudes and behaviors
» Shows impact in roadway capacity
7. Procedure 7
Selected a 80-ft straight and level stretch of road with free-flowing traffic
Divided into two teams stationed 80-ft apart to time vehicles
Observed six types of vehicles: Motorbikes, Cars, CNGs, Pickup Van,Rickshaw
& Bicycle
Used a stopwatch or timer to record the time it took for each vehicle to travel
80-ft
Repeated the process for several vehicles of each type and calculated the
mean time for each vehicle
Divided the length of the road segment (80-ft) by the mean time of each
vehicle to calculate the operating speed
