A practical study about the vehicle emission testing in Sri Lanka. You will get to know how practically prepare your vehicle to test, your role as the vehicle owner and little bit more about testing standard used in Sri Lanka.
14. Preparing the Vehicle for Test
• Clean or replace air filter & fuel filter.
• Inspect and clean or replace spark plugs & wires.
• Adjust air-fuel ratio.
• Inspect and adjust the choke.
• Check EGR valve and the Lambda sensor for proper installation and
functional operation.
• Check vacuum hoses for cracks, leakage or blockage and repair or replace
as required.
• Repair or replace system parts as required.
• Once in line for testing, turn off all accessories such as air conditioner,
lights, wipers, heater, radio etc.
15. Preparing the Vehicle for Test
• Clean or replace air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump & the silencer.
• Check the injector nozzle condition for mismatches.
• Check for fuel injector fouling or mismatch and repair or replace as required.
• Adjust or repair the turbocharger.
• Examine governor, fuel rack and injector timing for possible adjustment.
• Repair or replace system parts as required.
• Run at least 30 min before the test at a reasonable speed to heat your engine. Until your vehicle reaches
optimal operating temperature, it emits excess pollutants.
• To remove carbon particles in the exhaust system, flush your diesel vehicle exhaust system three times
by pressing the accelerator a few times rapidly.
• Once in line for testing, turn off all accessories such as air conditioner, lights, wipers, heater, radio etc.
• While in line, do not shut off the engine. This helps keep the engine at the normal operating
temperature.
20. The Test Session – Visual Test
Following criteria will be used to test the vehicle visually:
• Chassis number
• Engine number
• Silencer leak
• Oil Leak
• Water Leakages
• Air Filter (if Possible)
• Fuel tank cap
• Engine oil dip stick
• Plug Top
• Fan belt
• Abnormal vibration and noises
• Operation of governor (accelerator)
21. The Test Session
The VET center will check emissions at:
1. 0RPM (Idle) and
2. 2500RPM
22. The Test Session
The VET center will use following equipments to
complete the test.
1. Gas Analyzer (for petrol vehicles)
2. RPM meter (for both petrol & diesel)
3. Smoke Opacity Meter (for diesel)
4. Movable camera to capture vehicle image
5. Temperature testing equipments
23. The Test Session – Petrol Vehicles
• The vehicle undergo the gas analyzer test in the set
temperature and RPM (2500+/-300) and CO and HC are
monitored under Idle and 2500 RPM speed.
• During testing, the automated software is used and the
technicians only have to insert the testing probe. There
is an inbuilt camera which automatically takes picture
of vehicle number plate during the testing.
24. The Test Session – Diesel Vehicles
• The oil temperature is set around 55 0C.
• The diesel vehicles undergo smoke opacity
test (Snap Acceleration), with 3 pre snap
acceleration test cycles and 3 measurement
snap acceleration test cycles.
25. The Test Session
At the end of test, if the vehicle “pass” the test,
the center will produce you the VET
certificate.
27. The Test Session
At the end of test, if the vehicle “failed to pass”
the test, the center will advice you what
actions to be taken to repair the vehicle.
29. Renewal of Vehicle Licence
Bring following documents to your Divisional
Secretariat office.
- Original of existing vehicle licence
- (Certified) copy of vehicle registration certificate
- Original VET certificate
- Licence Fee
30. Renewal of Vehicle Licence
Renewal at divisional secretariat office takes
only few minutes and new licence can
obtained at the same time.
31. Renewal of Vehicle Licence
Valid Up to Indication
Vehicle Description
Owners’ Name
VET certificate Number
Valid Period
32. Possession of Documents
Following documents should always be with
the vehicle.
- Original Revenue Licence
- Original VET certificate
- Copy of Vehicle Registration
33. Online Renewal of Licence
(This service is currently available for vehicles registered in western province)
1. Visit www.srilanka.lk and login. Click on ‘e-Revenue licence’.
2. Enter vehicle details
3. Select your VET company
4. Select your insurance company
5. Make online payment
6. Temporary licence will be emailed immediately and original
licence will be delivered by registered post within 7 days.
35. What kind of pollutants?
Current VET standard in Sri Lanka check for
three kinds of pollutants.
1. Hydrocarbons (HC)
2. Carbon Monoxide (CO)
3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
36. What kind of pollutants?
Pollutants not covered by Sri Lankan VET
standard are:
1. Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
2. Particulate Matter/Lead (PM)
3. Sulphur Oxide (SO2)
37. Emission Standard in Sri Lanka
• For Petrol & LPG Vehicles
Type of Vehicle Carbon
Monoxide
CO (%v/v)
Hydrocarbon
HC (ppm v/v)
Petrol Motor Cycles 6 9000
Petrol Motor Tricycles 6 9000
Other Petrol Vehicles 4.5 1200 Both Idling and 2500
RPM/No load
%v/v = Percent by volume ppm v/v = Parts per million by volume
38. Emission Standard in Sri Lanka
• Diesel Vehicles
k Factor
8.0
k Factor = Absorption Coefficient
39. Definition of Abbreviations
%v/v
(Percent by volume)
Volume-Volume percentage (v/v %) is a measure of
concentration of CO in Petrol expressed as the ratio of the
volume of the Petrol to the total volume of the Petrol
multiplied by 100%
Higher the ratio, higher the risk!
40. Definition of Abbreviations
ppm v/v
(Parts per million by volume)
Concentration of particles by volume of one part of a gas, per
million parts of air.
41. Definition of Abbreviations
k Factor
(Parts per million by volume)
A rating/parameter calculated scientifically to assess the quality
of combustion of a Diesel engine. The K-factor, calculated as
the ratio of the piston bowl volume to the clearance volume,
is an approximate measure of the proportion of air available
for combustion.
(Also called Smoke Opacity at Instant acceleration k-factor (m-1)
