  2. 2. Setting the Stage <ul><li>Each time Hitler took land, he said he was finished-----Until the next time. </li></ul><ul><li>Takes Rhineland, Austria Czechoslovakia </li></ul><ul><li>Next was Poland </li></ul>
  3. 3. Germany and Russia <ul><li>Stalin and Hitler sign nonaggression pact </li></ul><ul><li>Agreed to split Poland </li></ul><ul><li>USSR would take over Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia </li></ul>
  4. 4. Blitzkrieg <ul><li>Sept 1, 1939- rolled into Poland </li></ul><ul><li>France and GB declared war on Sept 3 but damage was done before they could mobilize </li></ul><ul><li>Took western half of Poland </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Large German Population </li></ul></ul><ul><li>“Lightning war”- fast moving airplanes, tanks, massive infantry to take enemy by surprise </li></ul>

Russia <ul><li>Sept 17- Soviets take eastern Poland </li></ul><ul><li>Moved to annex Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia easily </li></ul><ul><li>Finland resisted </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Fought during winter </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Used soldiers on skis </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Soviets suffered mass casualties, but forced Fins to agree to terms. </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Germany <ul><li>April 9, 1940- Took Denmark and Norway </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Took 4 hours to take Denmark </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2 months for Norway </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Part of strategy to launch strikes on GB </li></ul>

Germany <ul><li>May 1940-began dramatic sweep through Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg </li></ul><ul><li>Part of plan to attack France </li></ul><ul><li>Went past Maginot Line-system of fortification and into ????? </li></ul><ul><li>By June 22, 1940- French leaders had surrendered, and Hitler took control of the northern part of the country </li></ul>

Battle of Britain <ul><li>Now GB was all alone in its fight against the Nazis </li></ul><ul><li>Winston Churchill, new PM declared she would never give in </li></ul><ul><li>“ We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets…we shall never surrender.” </li></ul>

Back to Hitler <ul><li>Now wants to invade GB </li></ul><ul><li>Planned to knock out RAF and 250,000 soldiers on England’s shored </li></ul><ul><li>Summer 1940- Luftwaffe begins bombing GB </li></ul><ul><li>1 st- targeted airfields and aircraft factories </li></ul><ul><li>2 nd- big cities </li></ul><ul><li>Brits did not WAVER </li></ul>

The Empire Strikes back <ul><li>RAF fights back hard </li></ul><ul><li>Have Radar and Enigma </li></ul><ul><li>Helps Brits counterattack by using new intelligence </li></ul><ul><li>Battle lasted until May 10, 1941- Hitler finally gave up </li></ul><ul><li>Taught Allies that Hitler’s attacks could be blocked- he was not invincible. </li></ul>
  11. 11. More Hitler… <ul><li>Smarting from fighting GB, now turns to Balkans and USSR </li></ul>
  12. 12. Mussolini <ul><li>Italy went to Egypt at same time as the Battle of Britain. </li></ul><ul><li>Egypt was protected by GB </li></ul><ul><li>Hitler helped by sending tanks and ammo to Egypt to help Italy </li></ul><ul><li>Italy eventually one out because Brits were pulled in to many directions. </li></ul>

More Hitler Again <ul><li>Planned attack in summer of 1940 </li></ul><ul><li>Strategy called for takeover of Balkans </li></ul><ul><li>Persuaded Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary to join Axis Powers </li></ul><ul><li>Yugoslavia, Greece-both w/British gov’ts-resisted. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Yugoslavia went in 11 days, Greece in 17 days </li></ul></ul>

Hitler Breaks Promise (again) <ul><li>Operation Barbarossa=plan to invade USSR </li></ul><ul><li>June 22, 1941 </li></ul><ul><li>Soviets had largest military in the world but was not ready or equipped to fight </li></ul><ul><li>Soviets used scorched earth strategy-went on month after month </li></ul><ul><li>Sept 8-German forces put Leningrad under siege </li></ul><ul><li>Nov- completely cut off from rest of Russia </li></ul><ul><li>Leningrad refused to fall </li></ul>
  15. 15. <ul><li>Hitler then wanted Moscow </li></ul><ul><li>October 2, 1941 </li></ul><ul><li>Only made to 125 miles out </li></ul><ul><li>500,000 Nazis died </li></ul>
  16. 16. USA! USA! USA! <ul><li>Most Americans thought we should get involved in war </li></ul><ul><li>Neutrality acts stopped this </li></ul><ul><li>FDR passed through Lend-Lease Act- any ally could buy arms and supplies for cash </li></ul><ul><li>FDR and Churchill met secretly to make Atlantic Charter-free trade among nations and right of people to choose their own govt </li></ul><ul><li>USA was now involved in war, but not directly. </li></ul>
