Original from Asia, specifically from India, where it’s known from more
than 3.000 years. When it came to Egypt become one of the favourite
foods of the pharaohs. Appeared in Europe in the 10th century. Spanish
export to America.
4. Cucumber varieties
There are a lot of types of
cucumber, depending on size,
shape, colour, bitterness or
country of origin although the
main classification is between
two big groups: cucumber and
pickles.
● Pickles: small and green
vegetable. Between 9-12 cm.
● Pepino: are consumed fresh,
big vegetables with different
shapes: oval, cylindrical
medium long and cylindrical
long.
5. Cucumber varieties
● Oval Cucumber: short
cucumbers, with oval shape and
yellowish colour.
● Cylindrical medium long
cucumber: Ashley is the most
known variety, dark green in the
harvest and yellow when
mature. A few thorns, bitterness
and with a size of 18-20 cm.
● Cylindrical long cucumber: Long
English is a cucumber green,
with a lot of thorns and a size
between 26 and 28 cm.
6. Agrosol varieties
This season in Agrosol we have
this three varieties of cucumber:
• Dutch Cucumber: in Spain
it was introduced by
germans 30 years ago. It
has 40 cm of lenght and
free of thorns. Smooth
skin, bright green and
bitterness.
• Midi cucumber: smaller,
more handy and easy for
distribution, ideal as
healthy snack.
7. Best time for cucumber
Thanks of its high content of water, cucumber is perfect por summer.
In fact, its season was summer but today thanks to intensive
agriculture people can enjoy this vegetable practically all year.
8. How to keep them
When we are going to buy cucumbers we have to be sure that they
have dark green skin, without spots or defects. We will avoid
cucumbers with an unappetizing colour and also cucumbers too
long, that usually are more bitter.
9. How to keep them
If we are going to buy a cucumber
we have to push it in the sides, if
that part is white, it means that
the cucumber was harvested a
long time ago.
In the fridge cucumbers can be 3-5
days and if we cut them we have
to wrap them in transparent film
to preserve better.
Cucumbers can’t tolerate extreme
temperatures so we can’t freeze
them.
